slept through loud drain

LOL

if you guys met me you'd understand me (for those who are familiar with my threads have an inkling already lol)

So I finally transferred everything to my bigger tank (bigger in comparison to my old one of course) and I was doing preliminary plumbing tests last night. (got a basic 300 gph pump to pump into the return piping to check overflow and tuning)

when i realized it was already 2 am.

my tank stand is not sealed yet and the drain isn't fully submerged so basically it sounds like a flushing toilet at all times.

the tank is in my bedroom.

This is the loudest a tank can be, but somehow managed to fall asleep.

anyone ever punish themselves like this before? LOL

No most people turn the pumps off at night until plumbing is complete and any smelly paint/staining is complete. Painting over a running tank is not the best idea either.

And plumbing is done theres justva 3 inch gap above the water line im fixing tonight with a coupling and a piece if pipe lol

Rememver wat the say aboit those who assume lol

Yeah i hear ya.... Water noise is actually considered a "white noise" under certain circumstances it can be quite annoying, well toilet flushing of a overcapacity durso is annoying anytime, however, you become "deaf" to it in not too long a period of time. It becomes soothing as a lullaby and can put you to sleep. Sounds silly but it isn't. The opposite is true also. One that is deaf to the noise created by their drain system (the silent 1500gph durso) and then converting to a silent siphon system, can lose sleep because the background silence will wake them up.

interesting, I am noticing i am getting deeper sleep and more vivid dreams with the "white noise" water flow nearby.

I also found my mum sitting and watching my fish tank when I got home from work yesterday. ( mind you I no fish just ,coral frags right now since I had to go fallow to wait out the ich & brook parasite outbreak that took my clowns) I asked her if the pipe water falling sound annoyed her and she said no she loved it! I was really astonished, but then i understand? My original perception was negative because i "knew" i still ha to fix it. her coming upon after and seeing my creation was more soothing on a different level (calmness of space and admiring something her child created =P awww)

So what you are saying makes absolutely 100% sense. I did add the coupling and 3 inch pipe to it, now all i hear is a calming water stream sound versus a crashing waterfall effect. much more pleasent!

Thanks!

While backpacking, I've slept close to babbling brooks and raging torrents. Some so loud it was hard to talk to my hiking buddy.

People put 'water features' in their yards to block city noises and create tranquility.

So no, it's not surprising. Humans tend to like the sound of running water. Of course at this point in my life, that sound mostly makes me want to pee! :lolspin:

That explains the dampness in my footie pajamas when I woke up today!!!!!!!!! =P

:-) no way. There are discuss about slowing down the power heads at night when the lights are off, but turning all the pump off is kind of bad really bad right? Oxygen depletion will cause serious problems.....

I have a ball valve on my return line, i could halve the output but then the bean animal siphon would could starting and stopping due to low flow.. which is louder on siphon starts. ( i tried that )

and yea I would never shut the flow off...

My hammer coral wouldnt like that..

But does that mean you have to touch the valve every night????? I would say that is a lot of work :-)

I think you missed the part of the post that says: "until the plumbing is complete" it also went on to say until ALL fabrication work is completed; I am adding: till the system is ready for the cold start break in period of 4 - 8 weeks. What you are saying is correct, however it is completely irrelevant to a system still under development/construction.

which is why I am against any manual changes! =P

Maybe when i get my APEX CONTROLLER I will code in varied outputs via the controller for different times of day ;P

When setup correctly, the system is 100% set it and forget it. It is completely dead silent. The only reason an adjustment would be needed is due to growth inside the drain lines (drains slow down, which does not happen overnight.) If the system is not silent, then there is a problem with the system. If the system is not stable, there is something wrong with the system, or adjustment. You are going to find that in most cases, a ball valve is not going to be a fine enough adjustment for many systems. I strongly suggest gate valves for flow control, and ball valves only for on/off operation.

As far as using a controller for varied outputs, that is rather... ummmmmmmm... ...well, there is no point to it. ;)

That would make the system very hard to balance. Each time the return pump changed, you'd have to change the siphon valve. :crazy1:

Very little/nothing to be gained from that.

With controllable power heads you could easily change the flow w/o messing with return.

I surely did :-); The "turn off the pumps at night" threw me off.
