"Slim" style overflow box question

I'm working out the details of my skimmer box plan.
I had planned and drilled the tank to be plumbed in the 'bean animal' style.
That calls for elbows on all 3 bulkheads inside the tank ie inside the skimmer box.

The "Slim' skim boxes are far too narrow to allow for any attachments to the bulkheads inside the tank. I like the idea of a very long but narrow skim that would be less obtrusive in the viewing area of the tank.

Question #1
Can the general 'bean animal' arrangement work without the interior elbows?
A bean setup has two 90 elbows facing down and one 90 facing up for ER overflow.

Question #2
If I just have two drilled 1.5" bulkhead openings with no interior elbows can the 'herbie' method work?
That is having one of the bulkhead openings gate valved down to a full siphon and the other 'wide open' to tank the minimal remaining water.
