Slow down a 6025...

I love the look and function of this pump...great new product! I hate to appear stubborn....but there must be a way to slow this pump down a bit so it can be used in a 12g nano with a sand bottom. At full speed it's just too much flow. Any ideas would be reatly appreciated.

It cannot be done, it is a synchronous pump and it runs at 3600rpm based on 60Hz, the electromagnetic changes polarity 60 times a second and the magnetic drive unit spins synchronously to this. The propeller cannot be modified and give reliable performance, you could try covering some of the slots in the housing to reduce the flow.

would restricting the output cause any pump damage? I could easily machine a cover from plastic with some smaller windows milled into it that are smaller then whats in there now?

The best way to do it, in my opinion, would be to run a neat bead of black silicon caulking down a few of the slots in the back of the pump and restrict the input. Restricting the output could create a higher pressure flow which would be undesirable. The silicon would be eaily removable in the future and if done correctly would be hardly noticable.

Thank you very much Roger...now we're talking guys....when there's a will there's a way! I will try the black silicon caulking method. Does anyone know if there is a specific brand that needs to be used so as not to be toxic to the tank?

Most aquarium stores carry All Glass brand silicon in black. Ask your shop or check some of the mail order companies.

Thanks again Roger...stellar customer support! Also, thank you for the actual explanation of why the pump speed can not be varied. Now that I understand the way it works, it makes perfect sense why it can't be slowed down.

Instead of using black silicone you could also just try using electrical tape. I used some on one of my seios to do the same thing.

you can restrict the intake to a certain degree... but when you cover up too much of the holes, the propeller will just keep bouncing up and down... this has been my experience when i was trying to design a shroud for my Maxi-Jet mod which is pretty much the same concept... so don't buy the 6025 thinking that you'd be able to turn it down to 50% or less capacity that way...
