Small footprint - big power

Hello Roger,

I currently run a Tunze 9002 on my 24 gallon aquapod and love it! Great skimmer and a really small footprint to fit in the back unit.

I also have a 180 gallon pentagon tank in which I am grossly limited on footprint in both my stand and my sump. My current skimmer is doing an adequate job, however like many reefers, I'm always looking for something better.

Tunze has the 9020 skimmer, which looks to be rated for 500+ gallons and appears to have remarkably small footprint. My skimmer sump area is just 7.75" x 14".

I 'd like to know your opinion of this skimmer and potential performance in my mixed reef system with a good amount of leathers, LPS and several larger SPS colonies. My fish include a couple of 4-5" tangs, a 4" blue jaw trigger, 2 larger wrasses, a flame angel and several anthias. I don't know specifically, but I'd call it a medium bioload.

I've had trouble finding users of this skimmer and wonder why if it is so small and has such a high gallon rating. Any insight you might share?

Thanks,

mark

The stock stated ratings on our skimmers apply to a FOWLR type tank, the catalog and manuals give the following details-

Deduct 20% for a soft coral reef
Deduct 40% for a LPS dominant reef
Deduct 60% for a SPS dominant reef
Deduct 70% for a heavily stocked SPS reef

The 9020 (current model is 9021) will handle roughly 180 gallons of a tank as you describe. If you have a sump you would be better off with a 9410 or 9420 as these needlewheel skimmers are stronger.
