I've given up on the small ones myself Dave. High mortality percentages and high prices lately have pushed me to larger ones although they aren't normally as colorful. I've been having good luck with all the croceas I've been getting lately and the price is right.
I am at the same point. I have probably had 10-15 over the years and only 2 lived for any period of time. The weird thing is that they are completely healthy when I go to bed and a slimy empty shell in the morning. I mean great mantle expansion, appropriate light reactions to dead. I am wondering whether they are being eaten (which I have no evidence for) or if the light in my tank is too much for them.
It is a shame b/c they are the only nicely patterned maximas you can find nowadays.
