We had one of those assessors that swam upside down. It was like that for 6 months. It would come out and eat. It was healthy...just swam upside down. We actually had two of them and only one did that. Totally bizarre. I was very worried about him having some sort of swim bladder issue or something (I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to fish anatomy/physiology) but he was fine.
I am actually planning on doing something similar - tons of small fish and 2 larger ones (Still only 5inches or so)

Redheaded Gobies, Yasha Haze Gobies, Panda Goby, Barnacle Blennies (Photo)
There is a whole slew of gobies that I have seen that stay small - but they have common names that aren't ... that common (Ex. Red Glass Goby - there is nothing that looks like them by that name). I'll check on them the next day it is slow at work
