i know this stuff usually doesnt smell all that great, but i bought a bottle the other day that smells like rotten eggs. is this stuff still any good or should i return it to the store?

That's what it usually always smells like to me. But if you're hesitant, take it back. If there's no expiration date, it is probably coded somewhere on the bottle and the sales people where you purchased it can call up the manufacturer and check.

My DT's never smelled like rotten eggs, but maybe slightly musty?

That was years ago. I made my own phyto after that, and it never smelled either.

I wonder if they changed their phyto combo?

it says its good until december, but i wasnt sure about the smell, because its so strong this time that it almost makes my eyes water

The smell is bad, but I don't consider it even close to rotten eggs and surely it won't make my eyes water. It's not right. BTW, I have the concentrated DT.

Check the DT's site, there's even a section concerning smell. It's supposed to smell somewhat bad.

I'd return it. Even if it's been left out of the frig. or sitting at UPS one day it can go bad; regardless of the expiration date.

I just got a bottle of DT's premium reef blend

It smelled like sulfur, especially when first opened.
from DT's web site:

3. Odor: There are several causes of odor in DT’s Live Marine Phytoplankton;
A. Sulfides produced by living phytoplankton: A small amount of sulfides are produced by some phytoplankton that are always in the product. Sulfides are very volatile and they come out of solution even at low temperatures. If the phytoplankton is kept at a temperature in the 40’s instead of the 30’s it will have more odor. If it warms up for even a short time, say during shipping, it will have more odor. Dimethylsulfide is produced by some phytoplankton and is associated with cryoprotection in algae. The levels found were very low ranging from 17 to 21 ppb (ppb = parts per billion). People are very sensitive to sulfides, which are detected at the very low levels of 0.5 ppm.

mine does not smellas strongly anymore.

thats what i was hoping. thanks everyone. i did try returning th bottle earlier today though and they did tell me that the new premium reef blend had a stronger odor, i guess thats what it was. i was used to the smell of the old style of phyto

Sounds like a scam. My DT's is almost black in the bottle and smells pretty bad. I'm pretty sure everything inside is probably dead. Newly made phyto are nice and green and don't really smell.

What can I say? I just don't trust this product. Spent a small fortune mail ordering this garbage which smells worse than the latter. I don't care what anyone says but phyto should not stink nowhere this bad or even remotely. Sometimes you just have to let your common sense guide you

I purchased DT and discovered I was about 3 months past the expiration date. My DT smells like animal waste. I e-mail the company and this is their reply:

As long as you have been taking care of the product as indicated on the package it should not have had a significant die off. Shaking it up every week and keeping it refrigerated is what is necessary. The thing is that by this time the nutrition is lacking and it is just not as good a food as it was. Check out this link on my website.

best test for signs of overbearing smell (which means its bad) open a bott;e and then have a friend walk into same room. if they can smell soe=mething bad in the air then id say you lost your batch from lack of cooling or not shaking weekly.

If you check DT's website, you'll find a note that says they've changed the formulation of their phyto within the last year or so. The new formulation smells terrible, even when it's "good", unlike the old stuff that had virtually no smell.

If it's black, that's probably a bad sign. Otherwise I'd go by the expiration date and trust DT's. Just remember to shake it at least once a week.

The last three bottles I've bought smelled really strong. I took two of them back and tried three different retail locations with the same result. My LFS just dumped the returned bottle back into their display so I don't have any problem using it. My previous bottles had no sulphur smell to it.
