Smelly situation

I am running a Euroreef skimmer in my new 240 gallon fish tank and it is located in our front room. As it collects skimmate throughout the day the front room of our house begins to smell bad. I empty the cup in the morning, but by the time I get home from work it is rather smelly in the front room. Anyone have any suggestions on reducing the odor? Perhaps there is some sort of air filter I can put on the vent holes of the skimmers lid? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Possibly you could put the skimmer on a timer so it runs only at night. Or, just another thought that might work - add a small amount of activated carbon to the cup after you empty it. Carbon is great for reducing odor and won't hurt your tank.

April is right on the money here. Get some of those carbon bags you buy for AquaClear power filters and toss one in. They are nice because they are ready prepared and easy to deal with.

Anyhow, leave it in until you start to smell odor again. Keep track of the weeks that pass and you can use that to calibrate how often you replace the bag.

Alternatively you can use bulk carbon added to any sort of media bag, panty hose, etc. Heck, you could just poor some on the bottom of the cup, and that would work.

Set one of the filter cartridges on top of the lid and it will take out some odor if not all. I have done this with success. What model ER?

I have a CS80 on my 75 gallon and the an older model CS8-1 on my 240. They both let off some fantastic odors

Cool, the reason I asked is because I plan on a 180-240 in the next couple years and just picked up a new cs8-3 for pretty cheap. The only reason I did that was because I am starting up a prop tank and was gonna spend 250 on a skimmer anyways so spent about $100 more and got this monster for down the road. I will be getting married soon and the funds may not be as good for the reef, so planning way ahead. By then I will drill it for a couple of recirc pumps for the larger tank. Whats cool is that I thought when I ordered it it would look like the older one like my cs6-1 with the big union, but it looks identical to the recirc models just not recirc, and is built the same. I could have spent about $305 shipped for the cs6-1 or $417 shipped for CS8-3, and I figured this would save me money in the long run. Here is a pic.
