Smiddy's 260 build

First, I would like to thank everyone who took the time to share recommendations an inputs about equipment, tank manufactures, dimensions, ect. A big shout out goes to those apart of the Arizona reefing community.

Background:
I am one of the very few reefers located here in Flagstaff, Arizona. For those of you who do not know, Flagstaff is at 7,000 ft and we a ski resort, so its not like the rest of the state. My ability to access any reefing related items is pretty much non existent, especially being a SPS type of reefer. Most of my livestock is obtained from Phoenix LFS's or online vendors. This build will be a SPS dominate build.

Now for the tank:
I decided to have custom built eurobraced glass tank. The tank dimensions are 84"L x 30"W x 24"H with the front three panels starphire glass and a black back. There is one center overflow with 5 drilled holes (2 returns, 3 drains).

I decided to go with Crystal Dyanmics (new leemar) as the builder. Trenton Smith is the CEO of the company and the person I have been communicating with. I don't have enough kind words to say about him and his company. For example he is even going to personally deliver the system to my house with the company truck. I would recommend this company to anyone looking into a new system ( I do not have the tank yet so it is subject to change, but I highly doubt it). The customer service is excellent. Please refer to the attached photos for the current build photos of the tank.

For the Stand & Canopy:
I once again went with Crystal Dyanmics to build my custom stand. I am receiving a 42" tall steel stand with a non removable wood skin. The stand will also have a 5" lip around the base of the tank for use as an arm rest or mini bar. Please refer to the attached stand photo for an example Crystal Dynamics did that is similar. I am one who loves the 42" versus the 36" tall stands. ( Can't stand bending over for hours on end)

For the Sump:
For the third time I went to Crystal Dynamics for a 60"x 18" x 18" custom glass sump. For this build, my sump will actually be located in my garage and not under the tank. Please refer to the attached photo for the sump design. I made one modification from the rendering. I made the last baffle 0.5" shorter.

For the Equipment:
The only thing that has been decided is the return pump, the power heads, the lights. The return pump will be a Fluval SP6. Power heads will me Vortech MP 40's, 4 of them. The lighting will be Radions, 4 of them as well.

I will be updating this thread on a regular basis throughout the build process. I am hoping the build will only take 4 months, but no one really knows. I am on my 4th reef tank, so I know everything I would like to change from previous builds.

I hope you all enjoy. Please feel free to add your recommendations throughout the process. I do not mind a healthy challenge! I also don't mind any questions you might have.

Thanks,

Ryan

Yeah been about a month or two. I am excited as well just a big investment so multiple opinions and recommendations help.

For sure, I take forever to put my new builds together. I'm in the middle of slowly acquiring equipment for my new 120 and I'll be lucky if I have it submerged by the end of July 4th weekend.

Best of luck! I am about to sell my 120 when my tank gets going. Its hard to not to keep wanting to get bigger.

First tank was a 20. Then I went to a 20 long because shallower is better. Then I went to a 40 because I really need a little more space for variation in lighting. Now a 120 because I wanted a tank with an overflow and might as well upsize a bit.

It's a never ending process that slowly bankrupts me.

I take it you're mounting the radions perpendicular to the tank since it's 30" front to back? Personally I would add another radion for an SPS dominate tank. I don't know how easily you can add another down the line, but if you're making a custom rail or something, maybe it's something to consider now.

When you come down to the valley next time I am extending an invitation to come see my little piece of the reef. I just started my build thread in the SPS keepers forum. I have 3 Radions lighting up my tank. Could be nice to see how my SPS look under the lights you are also going to use. Most of mine are still very small but the tank has only been running since Feb. looking forward to seeing your progress.

I am going to mount them perpendicular because it is so wide. I might add another radion or just put all four with the wide lens. They aren't cheap so its hard to justify right off the bat. Ecotech does sell rails now for mounting them and I was thinking of getting that and mounting to the canopy, so if I do need to add another one I can do so. Granted I will have about 6 - 10 months before my tank is that full of SPS. I defiantly should keep that in the back of my mind of having 5. Thank you for placing that seed!

I will defiantly take you up on that offer. I currently have 2 radions on my 120 4' x 2' x 2' with SPS and they look amazing. I love the ability to control every aspect. My only wish... They weren't like 750 a piece

Sump/ Refugium Garage Stand

Sump/ Refugium Garage Stand

Update:

Was able to finish building the stand for the Sump and Biocube ( refugium) that will be located directly behind the tank in the garage. This stand is nothing fancy. The refugium will be located on top level on the stand with the sump underneath.

Please refer to attached photos to see the stand.

Tank/Stand/Sump have arrived!

Tank/Stand/Sump have arrived!

Both tanks and stand arrived safely. With a help of quite a few friends, we were able to place this bad boy into its permanent location. Due to the size of this tank..... The room it is located in, is going to have to be re furnished (downsized) because it takes up like half the room it seems. I am very impressed with Crystal Dynamics and Trent and the quality of the tanks.

Please let me know what you think and if you have any questions feel free to ask them.

I will be plumbing and wiring the separate circuit to the tank this holiday weekend as well put the sump into the correct location.
