Smoke alarm in Stand?

I wonder how the high humdity would affect the life of the detector.

That is why mine is on the ceiling in the room and not in the stand. Molst stands are open back and are not going to hold the smoke anyway. Ideally, the detector should be on the ceiling, around 12" off a wall. Well I dont remember the exact distance but I think its about 12"from a wall.

chaseracing, check out my photo gallery to see how I am setup. I have the smoke detector setup on my house alarm and it is not that much trouble. I also have a water detector. And if I lived in a house and not a condo, I could have the alarm shut off the power to the tank in the event that either of those trip. This is not insane in my opinion, just extra layers of safety. Afterall, if you poll the RC board, you will also find a boat load of people against GFCI and ground probes.

By the way, I am not a yes man. I agree with petoonia

I have always had a smoke detector and a carbon monoxide detector under my stand (for my C02) it's a small expense for more safety for your family, I have invested alot of time and money on my new electrical system for my tank, from the stand to the panel with dedicated GFCI's, I don't want to have to say I'm sorry to my wife for burning down our home -over my hobby, think about it guys put off the new light system for now and tighten up your stand.

Agreed. Thanks!

Dosn't it seem though that the same result could be achieved by mounting the smoke detector like 3 feet from the tank? It seems like the moisture under the stand could increase the chances for failure. I know that anything paper i keep under the stand (test kit boxes) get damaged by the moisture that's present. Just my $.02.

That is why mine is on the ceiling, the smoke will rise. The time difference between setting it off in the stand and in the ceiling I dont suspect will be enough to make a difference.

Get a battery operated one, that way you're not going to find out the device that shorted and caused your fire was your smoke detector.

If you want to mount a smoke detector, do it on the ceiling above your tank and not in your stand. There are two basic types of smoke detectors, Ionization Detectors and Photoelectric Detectors. Ionization detectors have an ionization chamber and use americium-241 for the ionization. There is only about a centimeter of space between ionization plates and the salt water would certainly corode them and the salt may even give false alarms. The Photoelectric detectors use a beam of light aimed at a photocell and when smoke blocks the light, it sets off the alarm. Once again, corrosion of the photocell or the parts around it, could make it useless.

Edit:
If you are really that concerned about a fire, invest the money in an actual flame detector. They make models ideal for harsh and corrosive environments. Like these:

I am thinking that I probably have enough air space under the standthat hopefully corrosion wont be a pressing problem. If I have to replace it once a year or something, then I am good with that.

The only real reason why I am slightly concerned, is that I shortened most of the wiring on most of the equiptment. I have everything custom wired and all tucked away neatly. I didn't wants the Hornets nest of wires under the stand. I did solder every connection, but you never know.

I bought a mini unit from HD. I think it cost about $5. I may never have a fire, or short circuit, or whatever but the $5 makes it a touch easier to sleep at night.

I should finally be getting my tank this week (maybe?!??!??!)
