Smoking recirc pump

So....4:45am, just going to bed (I work nights), and my recirculation pump on my 55g reef starts to make a weird sound. Not a horriific sound, just louder, and noticebly different. When I opened the stand doors, I noticed immediatly that the Iwaki WMD-40RLT was smoking. I unplugged it immediatly. Gave it 1/2 hour and tried again, immediatly the little "box" on the pump started to smoke. I think the pump itself is just fine, but whatever the little transformer is, its shot. So.....powerheads are running, refugium is not, neither is the skimmer. JUST got back from our wedding and honeywood a few days, Paid rent/bills as soon as we were back.....have maybe 50-75$ to our name. Cant find any used pumps anywhere. Super frustrated

Welcome to Married life... What a way to start out... I Do not have one of those pumps so not sure what is up with its electronics... If its some type of voltage transformer you may be able to get it at supply place maybe lowes or homes depot.....

I know it does not help in your situation but always Have a Backup of suck a vital piece of equipment...

Well, it very well may have been only the start capacitor. We'll never know. I couldnt find a NEW pump I could afford with cash in hand, so went looking the used route IMMEDIATLY. Only one in the area we could find was an Ad for a 90 gallon semi complete setup for $250. Talked them down to 200. Man did we cash in.

90 gallon reef ready tank. (pretty clean)
48" Nova extreme 4x54 T5
Aqua Euro external pump
2 Finnex 500w titanium heater W/gigital probe units
Numerous hydor power heads
Numerous Ebo jaeger heaters
ATC refractometer
SWC 120 extreme protein skimmer
90 gallon black stand

Looks like as soon as I can get a 40" high stand and canopy built...were upgrading to the 90 gallon. Yay!

Those Iwaki pumps are considered among the most reliable pumps out there. I would get in touch with customer service and see about getting it repaired now that you have a spare.
