I've heard that ceratin snails can't right themselves if they flip onto their backs. Does anyone know which snails these are, so that I can stear clear of them? The last thing I want to have to do when I get home from work is flip a bunch of snails back over.

Snail Question

Hi,
I have never heard of snails like that. I have had all kinds of snail in the past. I will be curious to see if someone has had them.

I think it depends on the substrate.

For example, when I used to keep sand on my tank . . . Astrea Snails couldn't right themselves if they fell on the sand. On the other hand Cerith could.

I went bare bottom, and Astreas can right themselves if they fall on the bottom of the tank.

I don't recall if large Turbos had any problems with sand. I think they may be OK.

The rumors are true! :) Almost any kind of snail can get caught upside down in a sandbed I imagine. Mine climb all over each other on the glass until they all come tumbling down. I just use my magfloat and wave it back and forth and the current usually flips them over. I have seen just about every kind of snail stuck at some point!

Hi,
I have never noticed it. I have always seen them get back upright. Of course, I dont always pay that much attention. I will definitely keep an eye on them now.
Thanks,
Renee

The ones that you are talking about are Astrea Snails. They get in trouble because of their conical shell and smaller foot. The foot can't reach far past their shell to grab anything under it. Ironically, I find Astrea Snails some of the best glass and rock algae grazers.
