Odds are good that they are actually hitchhiker snails. The name of them escapes me right now, but they stay small and are completely harmless. Most seem to come out more after lights off.
Do they look like these at all? (( for size reference, you can see part of a pink skunk and a blue Haddoni ))
My tank constantly breeds snails. You can see that there is a large size variation in the same species of snail in my tank. However, not all of the snails are going to make it. There is only a limited food supply so a few will make it and the rest will just add shells to your substrate. I have found that if they breed once they will breed again.
i have a 12g and i now have around 300-1000 baby snails split between 2 or 3 different species, the species in the pic posted above seems to be the rarest species i have 5-10 that ive seen
