I generally do not recommend snails in overflows, especially big ones. They have a tendancy to climb into your drains which can cause a blockage resulting in a wet living room.
I snailed climbed into my overflow, then came down my drain. Then went into my return pump and broke my impellor. I now have mesh covering the overflow.
I have astrea snails that crawl their way into my oveflow box, but they crawl right back out when they want. Luckily the oriface on my Steadman standpipe is covered and they haven't been able to block it yet.

A friend of mine had this happen to him and the snail got stuck and caused the auto top off to keep running and the tank turned fresh while water kept piling on his floor...He lost everything.
turbo snails liked to get stuck in my ball valves for a while, ask Rob (blindskatr) about that. I never put a cover over the standpipe, i guess i just weeded out the stupid ones.
had my tank setup for over a year without a single drop on the floor until one nite about 3 am when a snail got stuck in the u-tube for the overflow, got him out and refilled that night and the damn thing got stuck in there again the next night!!! so in the sump he went and haven't had problem since
