Snails Multiplying, Problem in sump?

I have had many many snails multiplying in my display tank and have ignored up to this point but I have now noticed that there are dozens and dozens that are multiplying in my sump. Will this cause any kind of problem with my skimmer, return pump, biopellet reactor as they grow?

I would say yes. They may clog pipes or your pumps. I would take some out and take to your LFS for some credit.

Put them in your DT also.

Becareful if you have any float valves. They love to get on it just to make it sink.

Looks like it is time for you to go to the FOR SALE forum and get rid of 'some' not all... only some... AND not the parents... obviously they are doing something correct.

Can we get some pictures?

I want to see what type they are.

Not sure if you can tell from the pics but here are some I just took.

Not sure. Maybe when they are little more of a substantial meal!

Yummm pineapple and escargots...

OK... I mean... I might be interested.

Deff snails... She sees them move everywhere. Wish we could get a good pic. Besides in two of the pics there is deff movement in the placement of them.

What type are they?

I found that smaller snails don't cause problems with normal pumps - they either go through practically unharmed or get shredded(short terrible crunching sound), but have never caused a pump to get stuck for me.

They can however cause problems with needle wheel skimmers. My Bubble King used to get loud when a small snail was stuck between the tooths of the needle wheel because that apparently caused an imbalance in the rotation.

I'd suspect the snails are Euplica or Columbella.
But the photo is so out of focus that it could also be Stomatella varia.

Maybe you can submit a better picture?

I dont think I can get a better picture but I assume they must be Ceriths, Nerites or Nassarius since that is what I have in my tank.

+1 to what sbgrad said

Look exactly like pineapples sponges. My sump looks identical......they sprout up on every piece of glass and baffle. Not bad to have....just not the most aesthetically pleasing to see them attached to everything

Look like vermetid snails to me. These will eventually grow into your rock and grow a tube. They release a web to capture food. Not dangerous, but annoying. The little tubes are sharp too!
