Snails out of water

Now I feel quite dumb asking this but I have never seen it ask before and don't rightly know the answer myself. Why do snails go to the top of the tank and come out of the water?

I'm not positive, but I always understood it was for reproductive reasons. There are many snails that lay their eggs just above the water surface.

alot of my pinhead sized nerites do the same thing. looks like they come down into the tank after lights out

My nerites never stay in the tank. They literally are on the floor every other day... I've found them as far as six feet from the tank. They do a nice job, but I'm not sure they're worth the hassle...

bummer I've never seen them snail out of the tank and onto the ground before.
