Snails

Hey I just bought three snails from coral reef shop.

They had some really big nassarius snails.
The shells were about an inch in lengh.
I read from multiple sources that the max size in capitivity was 1/2",
So why are these so big?
Also how long does it take for a snail to out grow it's shell?

Thanks.

Oh i also thanked them for their contribution to MARS.
And gave them a small donation.

Go me.

There are two major types of Nassarius snails - Nassarius Distortus aka "Super Tongan Nassarius" or "Jumbo Nassarius," and the the smaller version Nassarius Vibex (the one you probably read about). The Distorus can get about an inch long. Nassarius look cool coming out of the sandbed when those little noses smell food. Reminds me of an old zombie movie. :D

Snails and most mollusks will grow their shells in a logarithmic spiral as the snail itself grows inside. So its actually growing all the time, continually adding a bit more shell as it feeds.
