For glass surface, you might try a variety of algae glazing snails. Margarita is one of those snails that are touted as great algae eating snails by many vendors, but Dr. Ron Shimek, who has been studying snails for a very long time, recommends against it in this article called [url+http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2004-05/rs/index.php]Grazing snails Part 1[/url].
I don't know of any "detritus" eating snails. I wish I know one so I can put it to good use.
That's interesting Dr. Shimek writes not to use margarita snails. (I didn't know that guy had so many excellent articles!) They, and astraeas, are the only snails I can get to live in my tank for more than 6-9 months. But, my "margarita" snails look like this
Nassarius snails will eat detritus to a point. But, again, I've seen 2-3 different snails sold as "Nassarius". I like the big white ones, which seem to do a better job.
Probably best to buy many different types. The useful ones will eat and live, the others will die... they're really just snails
