First time snorkelling in clear tropical water. Staying at Grand Marriot hotel. June 12-17. So excited.

Should I bring snorkelling gear or just rent it there. Does the hotel offer free snorkelling gear?

Thanks

i was just down there 2 weeks ago. i personally always bring snorkeling gear b/c that's all i do when we go down there. if the hotel rents the gear i suppose that would work. i recommend going to cemetary beach (seven mile beach across from fire station), there are not a lot of people there and there is great snorkeling about 150-200 feet out. on the other side of the island (east side) we also went to queens monument. there will be no one there but if you go out 100 ft it is also great snorkeling. you must also go on a snorkeling trip (a 3 stop trip) if you have any other questions feel free to PM me.

Other good spots are the entry next the the Turtle farm, Eden Rock and Devils Grotto, and of course Stingray City is one of those things you need to do at least once in life. Just stay away from the herd boats if you do any boat trips. I'd also recommend buying your own gear. Won't be cheap, but good and proper fitting mask and fins will make the difference between having a great time in the water and struggling with leaking and uncomfortable masks that make you miserable. The mask and fins need to be fitted to you, so you need to go to a dive shop either by your house or when you get the Caymans.

Anyone want to recommend a boat trip company to go with?

Thanks

we went with marvins...

I'll double the recomendation for Capt. Marvin's, especially for a stingray city trip. Also Ocean Frontiers on the East End is an excellent operation and gets you out to some of the more pristine and less dived reefs.

the water is awesome down there but if you have your own gear i would bring it. maybe its just me but i like to know where things have been before i put them in my mouth and i know my fins fit so why take the chance and be uncomfortable on vacation

I checked out Capt. Marvin's site and I think we will do a day trip with them to Stingray City.

Thanks for input.

Any other advise or recommendations To Do's?

Staying at Grand Marriot hotel.

Thanks

do you mean morrits? if yes we stayed there for two weeks last july. great place. bring your own snorkle gear. red sail sports has a dive shop on site. i got my dive cert. thru them.

go to the botanical gardens and see the blue iguanas.

RENT A CAR AND DRIVE UR SELF TO THE NORTHERN PART OF THE ISLAND AND ILL TELL U ITS THE BEST OUT OF THE WHOLE ISLAND FOR SNORKLING. U CAN PARK AT RUM POINT. HEAD TO THE BEACH AND GO EAST IN THE WATER. ITS ENDLESS. DO WATCH FOR FIRE CORAL. THE CURENT FLOWS FROM EAST TO WEST THOUGH SO U MAY WANT SOMEONE TO DROP U OFF EAST OF RUM POINT AND THAT WAY U CAN DRIFT TO RUM POINT. HOPE U HAVE A BLAST.

Did you book it on your own or did you do a package deal? expedia/travelocity? travel agent?

Lookin to go down this fall or even next spring. Gonna use my credit card points and I think we'll stay for free!

We booked it through travelocity. I had te ez job of finding a vacation destination and my girlfriend did the pricing research.

We will be lounging by this pool when we need rest from snorkelling.

We are probably going to rent a moped/scooter and take an island tour.

Ive been to Caymen twice. stayed at marriot the first time and courtyard the second. Marriot is very nice! i loved it. The snorkeling is alot of fun, I would also recommend buying gear, first time we rented and it costed as it would have cost to buy gear. Second time down we bought gear, definitly worth it! Have lots and fun! Im jealous! i want to go back!!! Rum Point, Stingray city, ect all is great. and be sure to eat lots of tortuga rum cake!

I just got home from a cruise to Grand Caymen and I have to say that it was awesome. We did an excursion to sting ray city and a coral reef that was near by and it was incredible.

what's the best way to handle vacation money? Should we get travelers checks, credit cards, cash, or exchange for their currency there?

All the stores, restaurants, etc. will take US Dollars, but will give change in Cayman funds. So any and all of the above will work. I never worried about exchanging currency, but do try and make sure I spend any Cayman money I have before leaving ;)

jallen100,

You need to go back and stay on Cayman. As good as that reef by Stingray City is, there is much better :D

Has anyone stayed on the east end of the island... inparticular i'm really interested in the "The Reef Resort"...it seems to be the quieter side of the island....they claim to have great snorkling right off shore at the resort.
