Snowflake Eel

I want to do a 55 gallon (48" long, 12" wide, 18 " tall) FOWLR. I want something interesting so I chose the snowflake eel. Will this size tank make the eel happy even when it's full grown? What are some tank mates I could keep with the eel?

I have a few fish with my Snowflake Moray Eel (Volitan Lionfish, Fox Faced Rabbit Fish, Stars & Stripes Puffer, Porcupine Puffer, Purple Tipped Condylactus Anemone, Red Mushrooms, and Turbo Snails). He seems to love it in their and like The Carson stated they stay curled up in a rock for the majority of the time. (I wish he would come out and swim like that first couple of days we got him. Nice to see them move around.)

he will do fantastically in a 55, as far as tankmates i would stick to fish that are not torpedo shaped and do not exceed 5 inches if you want to keep them their entire lives. a dwarf angel, dwarf lion, toby puffer, and one of the smaller tangs (like a yellow or a purple that only grow to 7-8in) or even a large female maroon clown would be cool. if it was my tank to stock that is prolly what i would do.

Thanks for the posts so far! First of all, I really don't want to put a Tang or a Trigger in a 55 gallon. I just wouldn't feel comfortable with it.
I like the idea of a large female Maroon Clown to add some color. Will 5 inch fish be small enough to tempt the eel? If not, how many 5 inch fish could I add without overstocking?

snowflake eels do not eat fish, they eat shrimp, crab and other crustateans so you should not worry about that unless he is extremely hungry. good idea not to add a tang or a trigger a 55 gallon tank is way to small.

Oh yeah. I read that they like shrimp as well. Guess I forgot. However, I did read that they sometimes launch onto fish during feeding time when they get excited.

As far as fish selection goes, I like the Lemonpeel Angelfish (Centropyge flavissimus). I'd like maybe one more fast moving 5 - 6 inch fish. Any suggestions?

How about this:

1 x Antennata Lionfish
1 x Lemonpeel Angelfish
1 x Snowflake Moray

Sound good? Am I overstocking?

I have a snowflake moray in my 90g (no top BTW). I have had him for 2 years now with no troubles with my fish, which include:
Bristle Tooth Tang
Tomato Clown
Molly Miller
Leaf Fish
Small Clarki Clown
Pajama Cardinal
He is upwards of 18" long and about 2-3" diamater. He is always swiming around in my rock, and always follows me when I walk around my tank. GL with him!

I am sorry but he has been in the same tank for 2+ years without a top and has never even attepted to jump. I think it depends on the eel.

I highly reccomend you getting a top! Thats just stupid...
Forgot to add, I do NOT reccomend this. When I first bought him I did not know about them jumping. Thought I should add that.

Not to highjack this thread, but I have noticed that several of you have lionfish with puffers. I want to do a lion, dog face puffer, foxface lo, and an eel.....125-150g agrressive only tank. Is this doable? I was told that the puffer will pick at the lions fins?????

Greg, I had 2 snowflakes, one for 2 years, and another for 10 years. They never once bothered another fish. Anything can happen of course with a particular individual, but they and zebras are about your safest bets for common morays. And maybe I was lucky, but I never had another fish bother them either. Keep in mind that my old one got 30" - they do get decent sized. IMO, you *can* keep one in a 55, but if you can move up to a bigger tank someday that would be better. No rush though.

Your choice of fish look fine.

MBuck, that might work, but puffers and triggers do tend to pick on lions' fins. I would try it - I definitely would choose a puffer over a trigger in that situation. If you see some aggression just pull one of them out. The aggression will likely be only nipping as opposed to killing (such as an ill-tempered trigger might do). And re: eel/puffer, I've done it and it worked out fine.
