I am loosing my prise clam. Two nights ago I noticed my cleaners were hanging out on it. I did a FW dip and inspected it with a magnifying glass. I did not see anything then. Today It is partially open one end looks great the other looks like crap. I have not added any new clams in a few months. I did loose one small clam due to a coral falling in it ripping it open. Is it possible that the lg turbos I added a few weeks ago had pyrmids on them??. I do not see anything, I am at a loss. I am setting up a hospital tank for it as I have other clams in that tank. I hate to lose my long time friend. It is not even the same clam that the clowns are hosting in that I could understand. This one I am at a loss.
Tank mates 5 clams one algae blenny been with me from the start of this addiction 6 line wrasse had him for about 2-3 years. Mandrine about 6 months Yellow wrasse about 6-8 months. 2 clowns had a year. some turbo snails and marginatas 2 cleaner shrimp small 1-5 pepermint shrimp. I only have seen one since adding them. Any thoughts. Will get water pars by morning.
I am wondering if the yellow wrasse is bugging it at night but as soon as lights go out he hides in the sand pile until lights come on in the morning.
 
If it's healthy enough to take out of the tank, I would. This way you could examine it.

Scott Osbourne found a flatworm on his once, it was camouflaged mimicking the clam's appearance almost perfectly.
 
I never found any pyramids on mine, apparently they hide in the sand and then hit and run, then it's too late for the clam.

If you don't see any on it, get it into a different tank w/out a sand bottom.

I have one small pile of sand in the tank for the yellow wrasse it sits in a shallow bowl. the tank has a starboard bottom. I just got a small halide so I will put the clam in a 10g for a while. I will pick up a better magnifying glass tomorrow.
 
Well I am sure it is a gonner I can see all t he way through. I lifted it up and could look through and see my hand.:sad2:
 
There's a very good chance there is a predator. It might be too late to find it though. Keep us posted if you find anything.
 
It will be hard to know if it is a predator as we typically think of them. It may well have been a single cell protazoan that rode in on another coral or live rock. For example, the so called Pinched Mantle Disease is thought in some quarters to be caused by protazoans though there is as yet no definitive evidence. Often when people see other critters munching on a clam, that is often a secondary scavenging response to a clam that has already been compromised by another factor.
 
You would think with all the modern technology there would be a Vet for Salt Water Critters like there is for our cats and dogs. I need a good Ocenogra? Vet That is something I would go bankrupt trying to save. Unlike a friend that just dished out $15,000 on a 5 year old dog then another $9,000 a week later. Some of us have no limits on the things we love.
An an agonizing part the poor thing is still holding on and responding rather quickly to any shadows or unfamiliar movement in the room. Still one half looks good the other end looks sad.
 
nah Aliens...lol

they are a preditory snail that feeds on the flesh of certian invertabrates like other snails and clams.
 
Actually, I think the Israelites made them, they were slaves in Egypt during that time period.
