And was wondering how long do these guys feel "at home" , it's been 3 days since it entered the DT. It went nuts on the algae I had in LR a few hours later after being released in the DT. Very shy to come up front though but swims freely on the back half of the tank. Sometimes he looks so happy with the new environment , sometimes he displays 'stress' color patterns.

Q: Are they just that moody/evasive? Or is it possible my tank boss lunar wrasse (4") is making the foxface (4") feel uneasy? (never saw any aggression though)

Am I just losing my sanity and freaking the bejeezus out of my mind with this? I just love the weirdo so much in my defense

Temp - 80c , Sal - 1.025, NO3 - 15ppm, Po4 - 0.4 , amm/trite = 0 , didn't QT

The one I had was shy but over time(months) he got more friendly but was always still a little shy. If someone would walk by the tank he would dash to the back.

IMO Foxfaces are weird and display a very shy personality especially in the beginning.

It took mine a long time to feel comfortable and still gets wigged out from time to time.

Dont get me wrong, I love them but they are strange.

Ahhh... I see. Glad to hear it's not stressed or anything (assuming shyness isn't bad stress related i guess?). It's kinda sucky to see it lose the vibrant yellow it wears whenever I approach the tank.

I can't get over the fact how peculiar mine behaves, my favorite oddity is after chasing him around the tank with my face he usually comes out to the center of the tank and starts swimming in circles. Not sure why but on his way down he makes sure he takes a bite of hair algae first before hiding within the LR again. What a comical oddball :lmao:

they are awesome on of my favorite fish for sure. i love watching him going in and out of caves picking at all the rocks .

mine was shy at first too wouldnt come out stayed in the back here and there. as the time passes and gets comfortable he will not nearly as shy any more. if he gets spooked or something he still darts into his bat cave and camo's up.

give him nori lots of it , it ill discourage him from going after any zoas. i havent had an issue yet and i have tons of them ... (knock on wood)

My Foxface is one of my favorite fish I have. I had mine for a few years. He loved to eat from my hands. When I tore my tank down to sell my house I moved him to a friends tank to hold until I moved and set up a new tank. My friend had him for over a year. Now that I got him back its like a new fish all over again. He is shy and shows stress colors and I cant get him to eat from my hand anymore. Some of that may have been because my friend would never hand feed. I still like him even with all his oddities.

They can take after corals. A lfs had one in a display tank for a year or so, and one day he decided he had a taste for stony coral. I have observed that they see 'green' very well, however it 'looks' to them. Anything green does seem to get their attention. And they will eat shrimp.

Also, their sting can necrose very nastily: don't get stung. When moving rock in a tank with these fellows, put leather gloves on under the 'over the elbow' gloves. These fish hide by plastering themselves against rock at whatever angle.

They also will start eliminating tankmates if they feel crowded in a tank. A large tank will likely accommodate them happily.

You called it... I saw mine nip at my green zoa's a few hours ago. It got me buying a variety of Julian Sprung's Sea Veggies, I feel like it's quality food, agree?

I'm 5 gallons under suggested tank size and I hope this doesn't bite me back someday. I'm a bit concerned with it's tendency to eliminate it's tankmates specially because all the other fish are 2" smaller.

4 g.chromis , 1 perc clown , 1 diamond SG, 1 azure damsel , 1 bicolor blenny , 1 Hoeven's wrasse all close to 2" , foxface is a solid 4"

I have lot's of open space for swimming , FWIW. What is the likelihood it goes rambo on the other fish mentioned? Sk8r thanks for the heads up although it made me worry about my fish again

It will be fine, just getting use to it's new home. just make sure when you put your hands in the tank for any reason, you always have your eyes on him.

mine does'nt like when I put my hands in the tank. He's still kinda shy, but he knows which container is the pellets. He'll swim franticaly when he knows' he's getting fed. Mine has never done anything bad like attack fish or nip at coral. He does put out his stress colors for the weirdest things. Makes me wonder if something's wrong in the tank, then I realize all the other fish and coral are just fine. he's usualy just being a nut.
