So I decided to throw this together

Ok so my son had this 2.5 gallon tank from Wal-Mart. We decided to make it saltwater. I stopped by Marine solutions on my way home from work and bought 3 pounds of rubble and 10 gallons of sw. They where even nice enough to give me some of their sand to seen my fresh sand bed. We are going to let it cycle and then add some low light softies and maybe a couple sexy shrimp... I would love to do a small mantis but not sure if the tank is big enough.... If anyone has some chaeto to spare(I would be happy to pay for it) I would be very grateful as I'm using the little whisper filter that came with this for water movement for now and would love to put some in the filter. So until I get my 55 gallon going this will be my new experiment.

OK I tested the water 4 hours after first set up .. don't really know it will tell me anything or not yet but my ammonia is currently at .50 and nitrites is at .25

I think I might have to much rock at least for the aqua scaping .. I tried to start a little with it last night. I gave up I am just going to wait for the cycle to complete then work on it. Then again maybe I should just break these into smaller pieces

I just pulled out a big bag of macro out of my tank. It is currently filled with water and floating in my sump. If you want it is yours. I just learned a month ago that I should harvest it to keep up the benefits. I harvested three weeks ago and figured once a month would be quick enough but it was already a nice thick mat of it and had to harvest again. So it is growing quickly. I am stopping by beldts tonight PM me a phone # if you want it and we can set up a time.

Question: Cheato is just macro_algae correct? I know I have multiple kinds in my sump, but the grape ones are the one I see the most. Is there any real difference?

COOL!!!

This should be a lot of fun for you and your son. Definately add more pictures as the water clears.

Cheato is a macroalgae that looks like a green brillo pad. It's one of the few macro's that you can actually put directly into a tank. Grape Caulerpa has issues and should only be left in a refugium. It has holdfasts that grab onto the rock. Once it get's a hold of a rock real good, it's darn near impossible to kill off. In other words, if you pull all of it off the rock and just leave the teeniest portion of the holdfast, it will grow back. Additionally, grape Caulerpa should be trimmed on a very regular basis. If you allow it to get too large, it can go asexual on you and put all sorts of nasties into your tank.

Maybe I'll get a pic of my pico up. I got nothing in it but a bunch of hitchhiker zoos and a lil piece of xenia. AND A HUGE EMERALD CRAB!

The sea monkey's kept climbing out at night.......:(

LOL!!!

I had the same problem too with Sea Monkeys. However, it didn't bother me much. When they started flinging their poo, that was a different story. :)

Well I hope I didnt shoot myself in the foot already ... i was using the cheap incadesant light till i got a better light and it caused the tank temp to get to 85. I pulled it out and ran to walmart picked up a full spectrum mini screw in floresent for now till i figure my lighting out its sitting at 78 now.....
