So I got a clam, now what?

I've got this clam in the tank now. Any signs I should be looking for in the event it's not happy?

So far it's dug itself into the spot I placed. I'm guess there is no moving it now.

im just going off what ive heard never had a clam before ive just heard several times they use up a good amount of calcium in the water

Following and curious, if you dose equal parts calc and alk and the clam sucks up calc do you increase both or just the calc?

I'll be running a calcium reactor. But when I dose two part on my old tank. I don't think I ever dosed equal parts of cal and alk solution.

But will keep a closer eye on my parameters now just in case an adjustment is needed.

Two part is supposed to be dosed equally, that said I think having clams is the only exception. I'm also following along as I would've intetested in a derasa or crocea down the line....

:eek2:Make sure your calcium is on point. That is a GREAT clam and don't want to see it go. I saw it in person:bigeyes::thumbsup:

Pics of it open and in full light? Looks healthy and happy so far.

I've never really dosed 2 part equally before, but I know that it won't actually harm the clam much if your calcium and/or alkalinity are low. Mine have been hovering in the high 300s the last few months because I just wasn't paying attention (I spend too much time focused on alk, not on CA). They just won't grow much, but they'll still be relatively healthy and happy in the short to mid term.

Lucky that yours is settling down though. My maxima never really moves around much, but dangit this derasa keeps moving every few weeks, using its foot to hobble around the non-existent space on the floor of my 29g cube.

Nice find though, can't wait for more pics!

Thanks guys. I'll try to get some better pics this weekend. It's a bit difficult with my current light setup to do too downs.

I notice my snails and hermits crawl all over it. Will they get used to this activity?

Did you just put it in your tank and take the pic? Or did something bother it for it to be retracted like that or are the lights off? Most clams I have had never look like that unless they are unhealthy to begin with. This is my newest clam iv had for a few weeks and it's never retracted like that unless the lights are off.

FWIW Why is the mantle retracted?

Im hoping that he just did not feel like posing for the pict.

Good luck with it!

Thought the same.

Is the clam consistently showing an exposed mantle?

Since the second day it was in the tank i've not seen it with the mantle fully out. What I've noticed is that there is always a hermit or snail crawling on it. I believe/hoping that's why the mantle is never completely out. Thru out the day certain parts of it will be out more than others. But never cover it completely.

That's the only thing I can think of. But definitely open to suggestions.

I believe you mentioned in an earlier post that the clam came from a local hobbyist. Can you send that person a few photos of what the clam looks like throughout the day to see if it's consistent with how it behaved in their tank?

When i picked it up. It was fully open. He's also had it in his tank for a while. Which was the reason he recommended I take that specific one.

But I will touch base with him and see what he thinks. Last night I noticed my cleaner shrimp crawling on it when my auto feeder turned on. Maybe I'll try to find another location, if I can remove it. Every day it appears to be deeper and deeper in the sand.

If you try to move it, be careful with tearing the foot (if this species has one) it usually results in tragedy for the clam.

Good luck bud.

Maybe move it to a different spot in the tank and see how it reacts. I had to move my clam a few days after that picture because something was irritating it in the sandbed. It had attached to the bottom of my tank but i slowly was able to remove it. It is now on one of my rocks in the tank and is doing great. Goodluck it is a nice sized clam!
