Finally (after a year long search) I got a Sohal. It was a bit undersized for the tankmates it would have, it was about 4" range. It lasted 2 weeks and from 2 weeks of torment from my purple tang it just stopped eating and finally died the other day. This really sucks. The purple never stopped chasing and thrashing the Sohal the whole time. Usually within a day or two they've settled down. Not this time. I'm really down 2 fish because of this Sohal. I gave away my big Desjardin sailfin to my brother so I could get the Sohal. The fish never tried to fight back. It ate good the first week and a half and just stopped. Sucks losing an expensive fish. Guess I'll have to find one 6" or bigger next time.

Sorry about your loss. I know what it feels like to lose an expensive fish. About 1 month ago, I lost my prized Australian Harlequin Tusk.
LA has a 5 1/2" Sohal in their Diver's Den right now. Why don't you get him?

If I were you, jmc, I would jump on it quick. The last one they had sold within a few days.
I'd rather wait till a bigger one comes along, 5 1/2" isn't much bigger than what I had. I have a guy in Cincinnatti who says he can get me a big one. I'll wait and see what he comes up with. Seems Sohal's are becoming more abundant now that the hot weather is almost behind us now.

I am sure that the reason why the sohal didn't show its typical agressive behavior was due the fact that it was immediately harrased upon introduction. Even the meanest fish has a hard time acclimating if it never has a chance to settle in especially when it is smaller than the established fish.

Just curious... I note on your profile you have both a 150g and a 380 gallon tank?
If you have these two tangs in the 150g tank... likely you will never have success.
I think the 380 should be fine... but who knows. I've seen plenty of people do it... but I've always heard to be cautious when mixing multiple tangs in a tank unless they are both introduced together and the tank is 300+gallons... which you have.
I love the Sohal Tang... I've just heard that they are mean SOB's....

Sohals are strange creatures. I had an established 4" sohal and added a 6" yellow tang about a month later. The sohal went bonkers the first week or so. He literally was quite angry about the YT. After the YT got established and got fattened up (I had saved him from a LFS that only fed him mysis twice a week if that. No greens/nothing he had no stomach, it was severely pinched and had lymphosistis. He is now nice and fat and flourishing and actually bosses the sohal around. Its funny how things work.

Newcomers take time to establish themselves and their territory. Even a bully fish is a pussycat in the beginning. especially a younsgter like that one. I'd remove the PT before adding and then add the PT back after a week or two.
Oh I know they don't establish themselves right off the bat. But for 2 weeks this fish never tried to defend itself. Usually 2 days max and either a dominance is established or a co-existence. I'll likely take the PT out next time if I can't find a Sohal twice the size of the PT.
