So much noise

I just set up my 75 gallon drilled tank. It's currently cycling and coming along nicely. The noise it makes from the water going down the pipe into the sump is so loud though. Is there anything I can do to lessen the draining noise?

Describe the type of overflow/drain system you are using?
Herbie/Durso/Megaflow/Bean Animal?

Pictures would help if you don't know the names..

But in general a drain/overflow thats making too much noise is simply flowing too much water and many times slowing the flow with a valve on the output of the pump is the way to solve it.. But there are also many ways that you may be able to reconfigure your setup to reduce the noise some..
Its still likely just flowing too much water through it..

How do I go about installing a valve on the pump? New to this kind of stuff

So you just have a single drain pipe and the return pipe in your overflow?
Have you thought about doing an over the back return and using that second pipe in the overflow to do a herbie?

Or have you tried adding a down turned elbow/hole to do a durso?

As to installing a valve what size tube/pipe is on the output of the pump? If its vinyl tube then you just get a valve and some barb fittings and splice in a valve.. If its pipe then just get a valve of the same size as the pipe and cut it and insert the valve inline and secure with PVC glue..
