So sad! I think my female black occe is impacted with eggs.

She has been trying to lay all day and her ovipositor is swollen. I think I see eggs at the swollen ovipositor. I wish there were a way to help her.

I've read up on other cases and I don't think there is much that can be done. I gather it was internal or she injured her ovipositor trying to lay earllier. It just doesn't look good. I have never seen this pair lay before, but I have seen a percula pair I have do it and this is sad to see. This pair has laid before, I just haven't witnessed it. Just venting a bit as she is a beautiful female.

Hi Kevin,
First check it´s not normal/acceptable behavior. If not, try reducing day length so light stimuli reduces and she can hopefully reabsorb them. Then, give her a break befor putting ligths up again.
It has happened to Juck female clownfish too and she was doing fine after lights went on later and out earlier.

Juck if youcome across this tell us how mrs. clown handled !

Anderson.

I was thinking of moving her to a smaller tank without the male so as to keep her from rubbing the clay pot with her ovipositor. I'll decrease the light cyble. I just hope it's not too late.

Thanks
Kevin

Try going through it with the two together. Not sure what can happen or stop happening (spawning !) after re-pairing them. Try the lights and maybe reduce feeding frequency this may make her lose the mood.

Keep posting ! BTW Juck fish had stopped eating before he put the lights down. How is yours ?

Anderson.

Well from experience when the female is in spawning mode, she will not eat. Today is the first day she did not eat a little bit. I'm going to turn off the lighting for a day or two. Then I'll only do about 2 hours at first to give the nems some light. I do hope it gets her out of the mood. I feel she's just rubbing it raw at the moment. Wish me luck.

Well, she's not looking any worse, but the eggs can still be seen. It's not looking all that great right now. She doesn't seem to be any more stressed than when she was rubbing against the pot. I don't know what caused it. Maybe she's getting too old to breed?, but they are probably only 8years old or so. I haven't fed for a couple of days. They have probably stopped the breeding dance, but I don't know as the lights are only on an hour when I'm at work.
I guess only time will tell. Maybe it takes a while to be reabsorbed by her body. I hope that's the case. I will be able to see what goes on tomorrow when the lights come on for the little time I have them set for.

Kevin

Good news...
The eggs have receded and she looks to be normal again. I kept feeding to a minimum and lessened the photoperiod. I hope it was a one time thing. Anyone with experience after an episode like this? I'm wondering if she will ever be able to produce good eggs again.

Here's a pic of the pair. You can see why I would have hated to lose the big female.

Thanks for the help aomont.

Good to hear Kevin! Hopefully she will still be able to lay viable eggs for you in the near future.

LotR Clown, where did you get those blacks? my reefing mentor in ND sent his breeding pair to someone in OK. just wondering if they are the same ones? they were amazing fish.

The one and only. These belonged to Jim. Would really be a shame if she is no longer able to breed. He got the acans and stuff from me.

Hi Kevin.

I have a pair of Ocellaris that have shown that behavior a couple times. The female would have her ovipositor down, but no nest, and she absorbed them. I was definitely worried.

This happened twice in a row (within a month period) with the same pair.

Finally, the third time, eggs were laid. I would just give them good quality water, and keep up with good foods. Nature, hopefully, will take course.

Best,
Ilham
