So Sad.... something needs to be done.

Yeah nice starfish recipe, or say that they increase the lasting power of men, and they'll go the way of the Dodo!

I seem to recall seeing a PBS special on them a LONG time ago, there are natural predators but it takes like a month for one to be consumed by the predator, they also injected them with a poison around the GBR.

There was a show on the discovery channel (HD) the other night and it showed a Giant Triton attacking and eating a crown of thorns. It only takes them a couple minutes or so to eat it. I think they said one of the problems is how fast they reproduce.

It's unfortunate but I see these everywhere in the Marianas Islands in Micronesia each year on business trips... In the many dives I done there I've never seen a Giant Triton...

Sorry, I should have my thumbs down in this pic... (alcohol and diving don't mix)...

These are nothing compared to the little known face eating Giant Blue Linkia... don't worry... I survived...

On a more serious and somber note, this is not my image but it shows the devistation of this animal...

Actually then you would have a bunch of morons buying up corals just to feed them!
LOL, yeah... thats sad too...

the problem is that before the sugar farmers started poluting the waters, most of the offspring died of starvation, now almost 90% of them make it through, so it is an infestation of biblical proportions.

See what humans do, We just SCREW UP EVERYTHING...

I would say that to battle this infestation, besides over fishing of these things, we also need to attack it by harvesting its predators in fish farms and such and then let them loose in the reef. sort of a two way attack. once under control nature can take care of the rest, as long as we dont start over fishing its natural predators again.
Thats not a practical Idea IMO, there would need to be sooo much work just to set up a facility capable of doing this... IF AND AFTER that was done it would take many years to just cultivate enough snails and what-not to even Make a small dent.. and by that time.. its too late.

I think what we need to do is to aquaculture Acro crabs en masse and send them out in battalions. After drip acclimating of course.
LMBO!!!!

Copps that Linckia is AWSOME!!!!!!!!

It is not the natural order of things, when it happens because of man kind. What they should do is dry them out like they use to do (and still do) to seahorses and sale them to the nick nack trade. They could also just dry them out! I read some where that when they first started to multiply like crazy, they went down and hacked them up into little bitty chunks, the only thing wrong with this is most of the little chunks grew back into full starfish again. So when they started they had 100 starfish and ended up with 1000 (number's used for an example, don't know the true number they had). Guess they should have done some home work huh.
