So, what do you guys wanna do?

waverz

Slave to the reef!
We have a whole new year coming up, i think it would be a good idea to see what everyone would like to do as far as some activities. Sure we'll have speakers, tank tours, bbq's, and field trips like we have in the previous years, Anyone have any ideas on what other fun stuff we could do? It's your club! Might as well do something you want to do! So if theres anything you guys wanna do name it so we can plan it early.

Im a big fan of tank tours, i think it would be fun to do a statewide tour, sure i would be sloppy drunk by the time we got through them all but sounds like fun to me!

;)

I'd like to see everyones tank too.

I also would like to make some of Randy's 2-part additives. I haven't really read into it so I don't know if we are able to get the right icemelt around here or not... If anyone knows let me know ;)

EDIT:

Sorry, wasn't trying to hijack.. I think it would make a good meeting project and it could benefit just about everyone in the club.

A big DIY meeting would be cool! I'm sure there are people here that would love to know how to work with acrylic, and just a hunch but I'm sure we can find someone in the club that's good at it.

Also I was thinking a trip up to Liveaquaria's facility in Rhinelander?? WI would be cool. Quite a drive but it would be neat to checkout.

Speakers are always good as well and tend to bring the larger crowds.

I think we should have 4 tank tours (one in each area), 2 frag auctions (in Iowa City), local BBQ's or pizza parties (in each area), a few demo projects (in each area with the club buying some supplies), and at least 2 big named speakers (in Iowa City).

I also think a task group needs to be developed to work out the kinks in the current club structure. This should be done behind the scenes and then voted on by the membership. This will allow the club to function and still fix the under lying issues.

I think the tank tours are a fine idea, I don't think we need more than one frag auction a year though, demo projects are always a great idea, as for the speakers......if it was that easy it would be done by now.....I've been waiting 3 months on a wait list for Anthony Calfo for 2008!....this all sounds real easy to plan but no one seems to look at the time and effort these things take

Thought this thread was asking what we wanted out of the club, not to criticize what others want.... :p

I was listing what I would like to see the club do. Do I believe it can be done this year? No. It will take a few years to build the club to that ability. By allowing everyone to list what they want without fear of ridicule you will see where the club should be headed and what is truely important to your members, thus eliminating wasted time and effort.

Please continue to list what you would like to see from the club. As Jeremy said it is YOUR club and you should get something of value to you from your membership.

I still want more than one auction. Tired of missing the one we had during a month we should have been off and not being able to add any diversity to my tank for another year. One to kick off the new year and one in the fall should not be out of reason. I know even my crappy tank grows fast enough to support 2.... :p

The tank tour structure from last year was great. All in the same month but all on different weekends so out of area people can attend.

Love the Live Aquaria field trip idea. Greenhouse coral farm and huge mailorder place. They have a year big event up there if we could setup that up on that weekend it would be even cooler. Man I'd be broke.

I'd love to do the behind the scenes Shedd tour again. You guys had that right before I joined the club and it sounded awesome.

Authors... Some would be neat I liked Paletta. Most I would just "debate" with. Meetings a meeting in my book. The lead time for the authors was kinda what I was getting at in the other thread.

DIY projects I am good at. DIY parties I personally am under equipped for. As I feel bad setting up meeting in other people gargages. Still all for them.

Auctions are the best reason for joining the club. New members get good corals cheap. Members with mature tanks can make a pretty penny. As my tank is still pretty much a field of nubs. I WANT FRAGS!

Anyway as the title said "suggestions" take them for what its worth.

Thanks

I'd like to see regular meetings - can we figure out a way to do a live meeting via the net?? no offense but I've seen most of you and for a live meeting to plan and discuss direction doesn't require us to wink and smile at each other .....

An option to a Frag Auction

An option to a Frag Auction

When I was a member of the Eastern Iowa Aquarium Association, they would have a small auction of fish, plants, etc.. during the last 10-15 minutes of each monthly meeting (that is if someone had something to auction) on top of two full scale auctions (spring and fall) of each year.

If a small frag auction/swap was scheduled into each meeting it may offer further incentive for better meeting attendance.

Just a thought.

Well, I am starting a new project this spring. It's called everyone can come up to my new house and help me build it :>

Oh and whoever wants to help design the new tank.

I personally like the speakers, frag auction, heck I like everything that I can participate in.

One thing I would like to add is some tips on how to organize your corals and rockwork cause after seeing pictures of everyones tank. I just drool and can't for the life of me figure what to do with mine to make it look better :>
