Feel free to share, suggest, you name it. This is not the place for personal attacks though, so please no names.

If you guys/gals want this forum to focus on just names, Id, pictures and pricing/cost/value, that's fine, but there is so much more to reefing and keeping zoanthids and playthoas. There is/ was a wealth of knowledge in this forum and I can't find any of those reefers logging in to this forum.

"You're talking a lot of crap Mucho, you been away yourself", It's not crap, I care, and there were urgent matters to attend to as many of you have. So tell me, and NO, No I'm not calling anyone out. No, No I'm not putting anyone on the spot. No, No it's not my forum but again, I care.

Why do you want to know Mucho? Because, again, I care about this place as I have for 6 years now. It has been home, my home, our home. A place to give, share, learn, help, grow, advise, listen and give back to a hobby that has given so much to each of us, including myself. I'm shocked to see a forum which 3 months ago was filling up an entire page each day with new post and replies to current ones, yet now we have 5 days of post on the first page???? The first page ??? Don't rely on a few to keep this forum alive when each of us has a tank and no matter how little or much you know, you have something of value to bring to this forum people.

If this gets pesonal and ugly and people start making attacks, the mods will be waiting with the ax and we don't want to lose any of or great reefers here.

This is your forum, it's what you make of it. I see very few people helping. If someone is trying to help you, for pete's sake, don't attack them. I see very few people starting new threads or contributing to new or old ones. If you don't put anything into this forum, there will be nothing to extract. You can revive old threads, ask questions, share ideas, research someones questions and point them to the answer instead of just giving it to them always. Share something which happened in your tank today, create a viable poll, there are tons of things to do in this forum. I can go on and on and on.

Poeple, this is your forum, it's going to take everyone working together collectively, not just a few to keep it alive and breathing. You can attack me if you want for even asking these questions, .....but I did something, ......I did something.

Warm regards, Mucho Reef

Just a few suggestions we can all take advantage of. All I'm saying my friend is that you have so much to contribute here. More than you know. I'm glad you're here and I would love to hear anything you have to share my friend.

I hear ya Mucho, I haven't been around much lately, mainly because every thread is the ID my zoa or how rare is this type...I try to help out here or there but stick to my local club forum more now. I have noticed a lot of the 'usual' faces (or avatars :)) have gone missing. Hopefully this forum will become what it once was again.

On a side note, hope all is well with yourself.

Hello D, we created the ID sub forum to afford those who wanted a name for their polyps the chance to get that assistance, yet we still have ID request in the zoa forum. Maybe it's oversight, no harm no foul, but again, there's so much more than IDing and prices.

It is my understanding that many have left again because of little or no activity here, same type of post and no one helping out or contributing. This forum can't keep going down and then coming back with a core few pumping consistant life into it. Hey, I'm only trying.

Thanks Dalston, I'm good.

Hi Mucho, I 'm a lurker of this forum and much of RC but since my local club is slowing down I'm here more.

1. How old is your tank? Upgraded on May 1 this year so 5 months

2. What size is it? 56 display with a 40br sump. Thinking about add another 50 gallon frag tank/fuge in the form of a stock tank

3. Deep or shallow sand bed? Sand bed in like 1.5-2in maybe. Its caribsea Hawaiian black sand. love the stuff!

4. Do you have any reefing goals? I want a full blow reef tank like 2 or 3 SPS on top with a few LPS maybe and tons of zoa's on the bottom

5. What are your feelings on running a fug vs not? I have some macro in my sump now. Never thought of running a full blown fuge.

6. What are you doing to make your polyps thrive etc? I'll I'm doing is dosing Fuel and iodine seem to be working, yet my PPE aren't doing well suggestions?

7. Type of salt you use? Premixed for LFS. No place for an RO unit:sad1:

8. How do you mainatin your parameters? My CA reactor maintains CA, Alk, Mag, Ph. and right now my skimmer keeps NO3 at like 5ppm when I last checked.

9. Have you introduced yourself in the link below whether you're a newbie or just new to this forum? Not to my knowledge. Thought this would be my intro.

I haven't been on rc much at all the past few months. Been busy with life. I am surprised to see this forum as dead as it is...I mean zoanthids are some of the most popular corals out there. I kinda gave up on them when the stores and online vendors started charging $'s per polyp prices. Absolutely absurd. Anyway hopefully this is just a fluke and traffic picks up soon.

1. How old is your tank? 4 months

2. What size is it? 38g

3. Deep or shallow sand bed?shallow 2 inch/1inch

4. Do you have any reefing goals? For now work with Zoa, try to move to Acan

5. What are your feelings on running a fug vs not? I would love to listen and learn from your experiences. i think its necessary and im adding a custom HOB one soon

6. What are you doing to make your polyps thrive etc? I want to know, we can all learn from the smallest detail.lets see i add some liquid reef food, and some vitamins 1/2 times per week

7. Type of salt you use? IO reef salt... works good for me

8. How do you mainatin your parameters?Water changes every 2 weeks. never have had a problem

9. Have you introduced yourself in the link below whether you're a newbie or just new to this forum?Just did

I wanna get you guys opinions on placing zoa... do you guys place them on rocks that can be easily moved or do u put them wherever. how do you frag them if they are on large no movable rocks.

Hey thanks for sharing Marchingbandjs and mockery, much respect. I just threw those questions out there, but I'm sure there's tons more to share about those great systems you have.

MTB, I understand, life happens sometimes. Well, not totally dead yet, but it's on life support. Everyone here has the ability to perform CPR on this forum to bring it back.
Regarding the prices, well, I haven't purchased a single polyp in over 2 years. I haven't given up on them, I simply refuse to pay what's being ask for them, but hey, life goes on.

Thanks for the reply.

Well, one thing is economics. Zoanthids are generally considered "beginner" corals, they are relatively cheap, hardy, and a person can put together a nice colorful collection. The lifeblood of any hobby is new participants, its not cheap getting into saltwater. Alot of folks who have been in the hobby awhile have maybe gotten their fill of zoanthids, not really up on all the new "name" brands, or have mature tanks with having learned from experience and not necessairly in need of some new information. (which doesn't mean they have nothing to offer the newbie)

The busiest forums on RC tend to be the for sale/for trade forums as folks are needing cash to buy new stuff, or don't have the cash and are looking to trade for something. Throw in that many folks may not have the free time they once had, school kids, second jobs, etc....and they maybe socking away some cash for an emergency, that they are spending less time on the 'net. The internet has become so very commercial, heck I'm sick of plugging in. Just a little while ago I was taking the dog for a walk and thinking how I used to be so much more active, the 'net has made a spectator sport out of life for many of us.

#1 72g tank 3yrs old, 33g long 3months, 20g 2yrs.

#2) listed above

#3) 2" sandbed

#4) starting a 75g dedicated to sps

#5) I think all systems should have a fuge so I do on the 3 systems running

#6) Ijust maintain water quality and feed my grandis mysis shrimp once a week sometimes twice.

#7) Reef crystals

#8) change 15% every week on all tanks.

#9)Been involved in some disscussions but relatively new.

Im from Hawaii and now reside in Nebraska for health issues such as a transplant of my kidney and in need of a heart now. So this is what brings me home and to this forum for support and my only recreation. Great thread to revive this forum Mucho. Respect for what you do.

good to see you Mucho. I got out of the hobby for a couple years, and just getting back into it and zoas are still my favorites. Right now i just have a few small frags and a couple of colonies in my 40 breeder, but im always on the lookout to get more

:wavehand: Hey Mucho! Not to make excuses but I have been away because my wife finally popped and I've been tending to my daughter and recently did a tank upgrade. Also, haven't had any money to spend on frags so coming here is kind of like painful window shopping at times. All is well though. Things are still recovering from my vacation disaster. I recently made an LED light that really makes my Zoanthids glow when the halide is off. I should post some pics of what they look like in the evenings now. Most of my postings here were done at work during the day when i should have been working (like now) and i've been trying to shed my habit of doing no work at work. OK so maybe there were a few excuses... :twitch:

I'm like mockery, I just mainly lurk on RC. To be honest I always just found it too buisy and hard to keep track of. I feel I will be around a lot more and posting with the new format.

Also Its not just RC, Its every reefing forum. All the ones I normally visit have slowed to a snails pace.

i very seldom get on here or post anymore because almost every single thread is an ID thread or people asking how much there zoas are worth or for that matter people asking how rare there zoas are

plus i am seeing the prices of zoanthids going way up! all over some stupd name or a group of people saying OMG these are so super special limited edition cow pie turds!! I must have them!! i see this hobby and what it used to be years ago and way before i ever knew of reefcentral... then i see this hobby now and how everything has changed. i see people paying $50 a polyp left and right....the fact is plain and simply this, if people keep paying all these crazy prices and play in to the name game.... prices will keep going up! its almost like all these people posting see money signs $$$$$ when they find a cool looking zoa/paly.

this part of the forums is nno longer fun to be a part of anymore. too many things have changed and to many people have been tainted by the new worlds view on zoanthids and the comercial side of this hobby.

I have been trying to post more in the zoa section lately, cause zoa are my favorite corals even though most consider them beginner corals. My 180 gallon tank is mainly zoa/palys frags with some LPS, and a select few SPS. I plan to keep it that way as I continue to add more corals, I just really enjoy watching zoas grow and morp.

Lately I've been trying to learn which of my zoa wanna be placed high or low in the tank, plus which ones wanna be shaded vs under direct light. I have also been experimenting with place a couple heads of the same zoas in direct strong flow and a few in low indirect flow, just to see what changes happen. So far I've noticed a difference in the skirt length depending on flow, and color shifts depending on light. Now if I can figure what effects the overall size of the zoas I'll be set.

Well enough of my rambling, I just thought I'ld share some of the things I'm doing in my tank.

Hey thanks for the reply, but I have to ask you, do you really think they are "beginner corals".

I know a lot of experienced reefers who can't keep zoanthids and palythoas alive. There are do's and don'ts which is why we have tons of questions asking how to, why and what's wrong with my polyps. They are relatively easy to keep but can be a challenge, one needs to know how as wells as what they like and don't like and this forum can and has provided tons of knowledge from those who came before us who have tried and true wisdom. I've heard that many have left this forum because when they indeed tried to help, they themselves were then attacked.

I haven't seen a cheap polyp with good coloration in years. Maybe I'm missing it I guess, my bad.

I would be inclined to believe you on the rest, but this happens everytime the frequent posters stop posting. We have battled this before until everyone starts contributing and then the forum comes alive again. The last time it took less than a week and we were filling a page, just like that.

I agree, we need new members as well as the old ones. I agree 100% my friend.

Thanks again for your input whowadat, it means a lot to hear what others are thinking.

I feel you on that one, it's been discussed before and I don't want to start a fight over it. What can you do !!, but I hear you loud and clear.

I agree that the markets getting crazy, and that some people are actually selling these coral to make money. Now we all wanna make some money but theres a line. Thats the main reason i buy all of my frags via my reef club. (except in special circumstances). The people i buy from are readily close and can give me info on the linage and previous home of my polps. and i end up getting 7 polyps of something that on here sells for 10 bucks a polyp for 20 bucks total....

I agree the zoa are attractive to new reefers, which may also jump the prices. I hope it comes back to life and i will be trying as hard as i can to help it along.
