So, your new zoas/palys are on their way...

Some amphipods, like the ones pictured above, develop a taste for zoas/palys. I prefer to get rid of any amphipods that come in on zoas from the outset rather than risk having a problem with them later on.

Mark

I know I have tons of those Amphipods in my tank. You can really see them at lights out crawling everywhere. The only thing I have more of are probably my Zoas. They completly cover the overflow, part of the back wall, and several rocks and are still spreading. Infact, I really should thin them out.

I have a Mandrin that is two years old and I am hesitant to do anything with the many "bugs" that are in the tank as I am not sure which ones are his food source. Better safe than sorry though I agree.

Yea, probably not but they come in all different sizes. Lucky for me in addition to picking at the rocks all day he eats frozen glass worms, blood worms, brine, and picks at marine mix.

Great write up.I will be dong this from now on.I have learned the hard way what happens when you don't do this.My tank is now infested with FW.

very interesting write up!!

Any harm in using this Lugol Solution on palys, ricordia, chalices?
At what point do you use the ReVIVE Coral cleaner?

Well shoot. Now I know I've got flatworms. At least now I know and I can do something about them. Let me ask, in your opinion, does a Lugol's dip usually take care of flatworms? I've always done one and now I'm wormmed. I'll get flatworm exit for next time though.

I like to use Kents Reef Dip on all of my corals. I agree that it is very important to clean your corasl the best you can b-4 they go in! Great thread!

Flatworm Exit is a good product but is VERY:crazy1: strong. I have had to use it a few times but have yet to use it full strength. When I use chemicals, as a rule of thumb I under dose and see what happens.

With the FW Exit I would suggest having enough water change water ready to go b-4 you dose the medication. This way if anything goes funky you can swap it out quick.

Typically I will run 1/2 dose and let it sit in my tank as directed. Then I will siphon off all the dead worms (important to do as the dead bio mass will wreak havoc on your system). Then right after that I do a good size (20-30%) water change to remove the bulk of the chemical out.

If that does not get rid of them all I wait as directed in the instructions and repeat the procedure. It might take 2 times to be FW free but I find this method is much less stressful on my tanks inhabitants.

Good luck!

Great job!!! Better yet, with the pics!

I do use fresh water/lugol all the time with the zoas before introduce them in the main system and never had problems for years. Fresh water/lugol cleans even more then salt water/lugol. The fast dip won't hurt any type of zoanthids. If you dip for 5 min. is enough. They normally open less than 12 hours. Most open less than an hour after the dip.

Grandis.

I dip my zoas in a h2o2(Hydrogen Peroxide). The ratio I use is like 3 to 1.then I dip in seachem coral dip, and viola there nuked and cleaned and never have any nasties in my tank.works wonders
