SoCal's 60g SPS cube (2x2x2)

I love the shot of the trapezia crab. My faith of LED lighting grows more and more seeing tanks like yours.

I didn't have a good experience with my SWC160. I like my SRO. The pump starts up no problem and as long as the skimmer is sitting in 5inches of water, it works great. The other that I was considering was Vertex IN100.

I have the Vertex IN100 on my 60G and it works great! I have had no issues with it and I pull lots of nasty stuff out of the water every week.

I like your tank a lot SoCal. How are you running your MP10's on your tank? I've been looking for the "best" (I know it's subjective) way to maximize flow while keeping random patterns so I can get good SPS growth but not overpower the tank. Right now I have 1 on the back glass on the right side of the overflow on reef crest mode at about 70% and the other is on the left side pane of glass pushing across, also on reef crest at 90-100%. I found that this gives me a nice rolling flow but I still feel like I may have some dead spaces...this size cube definitely make aquascaping a challenge :hmm5:

I too am starting to question how I have my power heads arranged. A lot of people with cubes have the power heads on the back as a space saver, but with my central overflow I am not sure I am giving certain acros enough flow. I may migrate my power heads to the sides in order to give the acros more flow. Not sure yet. Let me know how yours are doing if you decide to change.

SoCal Dude,

LOVIN' YOUR TANK! Stumbled across it as I am looking into how cube tank owners are implementing Radion fixtures. Due to space and budgetary restraints (enforced by the household CFO -- my wife), I am limited to a single Radion fixture. I am currently planning a 28" rimless "shallow" cube @ 18" tall. With the glass being 3/8" thick, the footprint of a tank that size comes to 27.25"

In your experience, do you think a single Radion would adequately cover this footprint? I know Ecotech rates the Radion for a 24" x 24" footprint, however I was hoping this was a conservative estimate. In your experience, what is the LARGEST footprint that a single Radion would be able to service?

Much thanks in advance!

Thanks man. I think you would be alright with a single Radion in a 28'' footprint tank. I think that you could get up to 30'' of lighting. That being said, I wouldn't put anything but softies past 20'' away from the center of the Radion. The fact that your tank is only 18'' tall works in your favor as well. You could probably get away with hanging it 10'' from the water line and be fine.

Whats sitting atop your drain pipe? Some type of silencer or flow control device?

Again, nice tank!
It is called a "Maggie Muffler". It is basically a mass-produced hoffman gurgle-buster or bell-shape standpipe design. It works super well. Absolutely no gurgling whatsoever.

sorry if you have posted this somewhere, but how do you program your Radion? I was on Natural at 65% intensity for a couple of months, saw noticable growth. Just recently using Artificial mode 12000K from 12pm to 4 pm at 65% intensity and 14000K 5pm onwards, hoping for more growth and more intense colors.

I have mine set to 85% intensity on natural mode, but I think I am going to go back to artificial mode soon and lower the intensity to get some better colors out of my SPS. Some that are directly under the Radion are a bit lighters than i would want, though my pink lemonade seems to love the bright light whereas my pink millepora and red planet do not.

Cool, that's what I was hoping to hear! Yeah, I plan on having my rockwork at least an 1" away from the glass on all sides and would keep only soft stuff in this peripheral zone.

While I am tempted to up the footprint of the tank to 30" on each side in order to increase water volume, I want to have reasonable expectations of the Radion and not be super-****ed if I find that a single fixture won't support my aquascaping plans.

I have a 30x28x30 with a Radion. I'm just barely up and running but I seem to be getting good light all the way to the edge of the glass. Mounted about 8" from the top of water.

Went to Vivid over the weekend and got a frag of strawberry shortcake and bonsai.

How are the two mp10's working for you on either side of the overflow? I am getting a second mp10 this summer and was thinking of the same thing...

nice add - I want some of that strawberry shortcake acropora, but haven't decided to drop the bucks for one until I get my No3 under control.

yuour tank is looking great

It is a great frag. The PE is really nice too. I am going to let it sit on my frag rack for another few days and then place it on the rocks. I hope it is a quick grower and gets some more green to go with the pink under my LEDs.

I really need a new frag of red planet. The mini colony I got from a local never has done well in my tank, though I am not sure if it is actually ORA red planet or just a look alike. A LFS has a awesome frag of RP, but they want 75 for it which is robbery imo. Hmm...
