socks

Everyone washes them differently. Generally I wash twice first with bleach second with nothing.. then soak in rodi water with prime overnight. Then set out to dry

Sweet, first time using one , it looks like is almost done is been a week . Seriously on the washer with soap??? or just to get the junk out with no soap .
thanks for the replies!!

First, I run the washer with nothing in it, hot water. To clean out the soap from machine.
Turn the socks inside out, rinse them, then wash with bleach, hot water.
Then I wash them again with no bleach, hot water.
Air dry them.

Sorry no soap just bleach. I'm a little excessive so I just use the prime to be safe I have like 5 socks so there is always on the tank of I want there to be one there. And yes rinse out with a hose prior to washing

If you don't like the idea of using bleach on something that holds things as well as a sock (that would be me!) I have found a soak in peroxide followed by a hot run through the washing machine with nothing in it works amazingly.

I know everyone uses bleach but I couldn't do it. I tried. and stood at the bucket holding the bleach.

I let the sock dry, pour enough peroxide to soak the sock, let it sit for about 20 minutes, toss it in the wash, then let it air dry.

I like the peroxide or vinegar idea, I only have one for now so washing machine is out of the question good rinse with pressure soak with either or, dry and voala ! listo

I've been using the same 200 micron socks for 6 years now and never found a reason or need to replace them. I wash them in the machine on high temp with a pre-wash and extra rinse cycle with only bleach and they are just as easy to clean as they were on day 1. They last just as long in the tank too and always come out looking like new. The bleach phobia thing is completely unfounded and it works as good if not better than anything including peroxide, vinegar etc. Remember, aquarium service guys have been cleaning aquariums, aquarium equipment and decorations in bleach for decades without issues. The key is using unscented bleach and allowing it to fully air dry so the chlorine evaporates from the air.

I run four 7" socks in my sump at the same time and have never seen any issues in my tank as a result and as I said, I've been doing it this was for 6 years now with the same 200 micron heavy duty felt socks. I let them air dry completely for an hour or 2 before being put back into the tank and I wash about 6 weeks worth at once.

I too soak them in peroxide for about an hour, then run them in my washing machine with steam and hot water. Take about 1.5 hours for the cycle to run and my wife hates me when I wash them because it makes the whole house stink like fish poo, but they come out white and clean.

Ditto on the hot water and bleach. Rinse well and let it dry before using. To make it easier to clean, add a mesh sock inside the felt one to catch the larger chunks for easy removal.
