Sodium thiosulfate in town?

Im starting a microalgae live culture and plan on using old tank water from water changes to keep the cultures going. In order to do this you have to sterilize the water with bleach first and then dechlor it with sodium thiosulfate....

Man I shoulda just said "dechlor"

I read in the clownfish forums that many people microwave the water to sterilize it. I would wonder about the disinfection by-products (Trihalomethanes) having a negative effect on your microalgae / rotifer cultures and whatever you are feeding them to. That said, we get our Sodium Thiosulfate from a labratory supply company but I don't think they are local.

Hey guys, i found some at B&L Pool Supplies...100% too...should last a long time.

Yea Mike I wondered about the residuals, but according to all the breeding sites, its perfectly safe and is widely used.

I could microwave, but thats a lot more work than dumping in bleach and then dumping in ST crystals...especially on the scale that I will be doing it..

Thanks guys...Ill keep you updated...
