Hey all,

Any of you guys run softy tanks without RO water? I am setting up a tank for my brother and want to make a simple as possible. Id like to put some zoos, shrooms, etc but I dont want him to have to worry about making RO water.....id rather go FO before that.

any thoughts?

Thanks,
Jorge

Biggest concern is going to be algae taking over your tank. Prob smothing shrooms and zoos.

Why so worried about RO? Most LFS sell it, some give it away. You buy enough tanks to cover your needs for one month. Visit LFS once a month, which you will likely be doing anyways for other stuff, and get refills.

yeah i thought about that.

i have an ro maker its just that I know he wont do it which means Ill have to do it for him....

Yeah... and stonies... but I'd never admit it in front of this crowd so let's keep that between you and me. ;)

I actually started running with plain tap water at least 6 months ago to see what the effects would be.
So far, no unusual algae growth (other than the coralline nuisance), no retardation of coral growth (to the contrary I think the damn xenia is growing twice as fast now), and no testable difference in water params.
Of course, every municipality is going to have different water quality and treatment so I really can't say what your results would be.

I never got a chance to aquascape it since the tank got moved to the other side of the living room so everything is just dumped in there like one big jumbled mess, but I gave it a quick scrape tonight so you could have a look see.

Hey John, can you do the same to my tank pleas??? Nice tank. Do you have any more of the ORA birds nest that you got from Nick? When I get my tank right, I would like to try again.
