Solana help

For people using a filter sponge in the overflow chamber, do you guys run into the issue of the sponge absorbing too much water and as soon as you move the sponge or change it, the water line in the back fluctuates way too much? Especially if that I'm using a ATO tunze in the back...

Any other ideas to stop the sound of the water falling in the chamber but without the change in the water line?

I have the same problem as well had to quit using a filter in the overflow. I have found keeping the water level as high as possible helps with the waterfall sound. For me the waterfall sound comes and goes for some reason as well, sometimes you can hear it sometimes you can't.

I keep the water level even with the platform that hold the ato bottles in the third chamber. Just high enough for the water to fall into the second chamber.

Here are two things I did when I had a Solana...

1. Use a cocktail stick to hold up the sponge, resting against the back of the overflow chamber. The little gap at the front of the chamber should keep the flow up, and the sponge will stop the splashing.

2. Tape a cutting from a sandwich bag, and tape it to the inside of the chamber.

Hope that helps.

I just want the water in the back to be low enough so in case of a power outage, it doesn't overflow.

I actually have a couple of pieces of eggcrate in front of the sponge like you mention but the sponge still absorbs a lot of water.

I'll try the sandwich bag as you mentioned and see if that works. Could you post a pic of the way you have it set up?

Thank!

It has been a few years since I had a Solana. Great tank. I miss it. I'll see if I have any pictures of the old overflow, but I doubt it.

I just did the most ghetto rig setup and it works perfectly. I made a stack out of eggcrate that would fit in the overflow enough to reach halfway up to the overflow teeth. Then I placed a plastic sandwich bag towards the back of it and it has now gone completely silent. Even quieter than with the sponge!

Would these plastic bags harm the water chemistry in any way? I mean would it leach anything into the tank?

Hey! I'm well thanks buddy. My little tank is coming along. It is nowhere near as beautiful as your Solana. You really should post pics of that on here. The growth rate you have is astonishing.

I used the sandwich bag overflow trick for a year or two - never once had a problem. It is amazing how quiet it makes the overflow!
