Solana tank owner thread.

I lost my elbow for the return that goes in the back chamber. It's the one that connects to the tubing and feeds water back into the display, anybody know where I can find another one or what size replacement I should get? I am waiting to start up my tank but I can't because of this!

I recently purchased a used Solana 34g and set it up last weekend. I got the stock skimmer working, but it would only work for a short period of time. I would adjust it in the morning to where it was foaming up, but when I would get home from work, the foam wasn't even coming up through the neck. So, after a few days of trying to adjust and re-adjust without the skimmer responding correctly, I removed the skimmer altogether. If I decide to put in a different skimmer, which one will actually fit?

Sagz70 - you need a 1/2" OD elbow. No idea of where to get one but you might need to email the maker directly.

prettyfishy76 - i was in your position as well, i went with the Tunze 9002 with InTank upgraded collection cup. It fits great but I am having trouble dialing it. Last night was the first time I had some skim in the cup, so maybe it was breaking in :)

Has anyone tried the media basket at mediabaskets.com? I was thinking of getting one and putting a gfo and gac each one if different media bags and putting them in the basket. Would this be a good thing or running 2 reactors for gac and gfo work better? I guess saving on putting 2 extra pumps in the back for reactors would be a nice thing.

This is what I'm thinking:

I own both... I am happy with the media basket. I have foam on top, chemipure middle, then a fugue with chaeto bottom
Works awesome, well made

You could give this a try, http://flexpvc.com/

This may be a stupid thought all together, but has anyone ever tried to build their own custom skimmer for a solana34, one that fits in the first chamber?

Ill bring this thread back for a bit.

Here is my new to me solana.

It was setup using established liverock/water from my 125g Im breaking down. I went ahead and put 2 clowns in the next day and Im closely monitoring for a cycle but Im not expecting one. I also have a lawnmower blenny and a few corals.

Im setting up an APEX unit sometime next week and thinking of getting an avast topoff to go in compartment 3. Has anyone tried that before. Will the avast unit fit?

Downsizing as already allowed me to buy the toys I couldnt afford for the 125. MP10 coming later this week and LEDS in a bit.

Im thrilled with this tank so far. Happy to join the club.

Well, Here's my Solana. Owned it since they came out years ago, only put water in it last month. I am downsizing from my 60g shallow tank.

I just finish cycling it with dead shrimp, a little ammonia and Dr Tims one and only.

Here's the plan:
Filtering -
1st chamber - Filled with rubble, 100w heater and AquaC Remora-S Skimmer with Maxi-jet 1200
2nd chamber - InTank Media Basket with, Top- Filter Pad, Middle - Purigen, Bottom - Chemi-Pure Elite
3rd chamber - Return Pump and some more rubble.

Flow - Ecotech Vortech MP10, once transfer complete from old tank

Light - Kessil LED a350w, once transfer complete from old tank

ATO - Optical Sensor, Made by me, 5 Gallon water tank in cabinet

Rock - Bulk reef supply, glued together with 2 part reef epoxy.

Fish - GSM Maroon and BTA, maybe a goby.
Coral - I really only want one or two really large colonies. I'm not sure what exactly will do good under the LED.

I would leave the rubble out... I did something similar trying to gain some more bio life but it collected a ton of crap. I quickly took it all out and my nitrates have came back down ever since.
When I do my water changes i siphon out the bottom of all the chambers. You should see how much comes off the bottom of the chambers. This method has been working well for me. Food for thought :)

Nitrate Battle

Nitrate Battle

I have a 34G solana and I consistently have nitrates between 20-40ppm. I do 5-10G water change at least once a week and they still stay in that range.

I need some realistic advice on how to combat nitrates to consistently keep them lower. I know that since I don't have a sump they will never be zero but I would like them to be lower than they are.

I currently have next to no algae, I feed once a day. My chambers run as follows:

Chamber 1: tunze 9002 with cup mod
Chamber 2: filter floss, purigen, CPE, phosban, chaeto. (in that order top to bottom).
Chamber 3: ATO, heater, return pump.

Any help would be awesome!!

Thank you.

Anyone know where the stands for these are available at a good price? I'm going to do a Solana Superbrite build and am considering building my own stand but still not sure. I've seen the stands for these out of stock at a lot of places and where they appear to be in stock the price seems to vary quite a bit. Thanks.

just got my Solana, new to the thread.
I have read almost ALL of the 80 pages of this and am in spin cycle....
for starters , I am doing Led's over the tank on a DIY bracket. my circulation is Tunze 6015
, stock return ...I was going to go with the "iN Tank" upgrades -media basket (ROWA,Carbon, prefilter) I have also picked up the Tunze nano skimmer (iN Tank collection cup)...Question ( & a stupid one ) I have tested the tank for leaks, NONE /thus far ...except that the back chamber fills as the tank does??? I have a 90 gal RR and don't think this happened...
am I screwed?or is this normal...everything else checks out
