That cutout. Sits about an inch down from the rim.

Weird. Mine doesn't have that. Wonder what the purpose of that was supposed to be?

exactly what you see there, its for the hoses and cables to come out from there instead of up and over, looks clean when you look from the front of the tank. I think tanks make in the last 2 years come with it, mine does not.

are you 100% sure its a bioload issue? if so, why don't you just reduce it a bit, they are supposed to be nanos after all.

I have 2 angels, a clown, a firefish, a tang, 3 clams, 3 shrimps, 3 stars, completely stocked with corals and I don't have any issues. I use the stock skimmer which works great for me...

Yea I think its only the newer ones that have it. My tank is a year and a half old.

My bioload is way less than yours Sonic. I dont know what your maintenance or filtration is like but congrats if you dont have any issues with that bioload.
I only have 2 small ORA clowns, a tailspot blenny, a cleaner shrimp and various LPS/SPS and a few softies. I've had algae issues for a few months too with diligent maintenance. Just fed up now.

my filtration consists of LR, bag of chemipure, stock skimmer and a carbon cartridge from a penguin filter. 5 gallon water change every couple of weeks. 2 part daily, or when I remember. Top off from my r/o unit with old filters, TDS reading at around 7-8ppm (changing these soon). And I feed heavy to keep my angels from picking at the corals.

you probably know all this but I would check that you have decent flow, your r/o is decent and that your bulbs are not old. You could cut down on photoperiod as well.

Yea my bulb is a year old, just got the replacement in yesterday so I need to swap them. I'm not sure on my TDS but I replaced the filters back in July so I dont think it could be too high. Flow I have plenty of - MP10ES and a Koralia nano for surface agitation.

I'm hoping with the new bulb the algae issue will slowly disappear. But I think I still will go ahead with the plan for a sump. I think it might be a fun project to do over the spring.

great to hear the stock skimmer working good for you, i am searching how to mod the stock skimmer, cuz i am planning to have this tank in the future.

any pic can show us the skimmate? thanks in advance.

here's the skimmate from the past 2 days. I'm skimming a little on the wet side right now cause the level in the back chamber is a little high.

I'm getting ready to start building my Solana, what heater is everyone using? Tank is coming in later this week, what are the dimensions in the back that is designed to hold the heater?

Nirvana I still havent done anything I want to do a sump but I have to convince my wife that this is a good idea. She normally responds with "this hobby is a money pit" with which I respond with "Wow you look really gorgious today" and she responds with "Nice try"

im adding a sump to my solana i chose to go with a eshopps rs-75,a mag 7 for return with a lifereef overflow this upgrade has been quite expensive considering i still need new bulbs but the uvl bulbs are on neverending backorder lol.

Ah Good luck with that man.
I just proposed before Xmas so the fiance is pretty much still in LaLa land so I have free reign to do what I want with my tanks. Her response lately has been "whatever makes you happy." :w00t:

Buy her some jewelry to distract her and then sneak the sump and other equipment in as she is oggling the jewelry lol

Awesome man. Keep us updated on your new setup. Start a thread if you havent already!

Had a little scare today with my Solana. I got up this am and didn't see the little clown in his normal sleeping place. I've been looking for him in and around the tank for the last couple hours. I even removed the skimmer from the front chamber to see if he had jumped in there.

Getting a little worried, I removed the plate from the 3rd chamber and found him in there! At first he wasn't moving, so I thought he might be dead, but as soon as I put in the net, he started swimming around. Lucky for him he was able to flop off the black plate that holds the top off bottles (which I didn't have in) and make it into 1 of the 2 holes. Whew.

[/IMG]well i ordered a lifereef overflow and a eshopps sump witha mag 7 for a return i plumbed it all in tonight heres some pics

now im pretty sure ive not seen any or many ppl put a sump with a solana has i searched the solana threads there were a few challanges to work around one being the overflow i ordered barely fit in chamber 1 with the stock overflow so i cut out the stock one :fun4:

i added a ball valve and a union for quick disconnect on the inlet and return side so i can fully remove the sump if need be in the future.
