The little one is out and about:

Thanks True Blue. It was a form follows function decision for me. No more water dribbles, no fear of jumping jawfish, and a massive reduction in evaporation, and easier access in and out of the tank than the regular glass hood.

I actually haven't noticed that it looks different. That's probably because I have a few oceanic cubes that have a similar rim. I am debuting a new project soon that may or may not be rimless ;-)

I have read somewhere though that keeping the glass top on can cause PH issues... Does anyone know of this to be true?

would be interesting to see... i have glass tops on my FW tanks with pressurized co2 being pumped into them and notice no difference in stablizing ph (i use a ph controller so i can see the ph at all times). I also have a tanganyikan cichlid tank with a ph of 9.2 that uses an airstone and a glass top and no ph issues.

I use Pura Pad Pura Pad

I cut it into 7-8 pieces. Only the bottom 1/2 gets wet, so I flip it over every week when I do my water change and get 2 weeks out of each piece.

Nice find, what size are you cutting?
So you just stack 7 or 8 of the same size of these on that top shelf? Which one of these are you buying, there is a small and large? Can you post some pics so we can visualize?

I use them in the overflow. I have a bag of ChemiPure Elite in the middle chamber on top of the rock rubble. Not much gets past the Pura Pad. I buy the small one, it'd probably be even cheaper to use the large one. Can't remember the dimensions as I'm using the ones I have as a template, but I think I cut 2 rows of 3, then get 2 more from the last piece. It's just slightly oversize so it wedges in and doesn't let anything escape around the edges.

Running skimmerless with no algae outbreaks in almost 1 1/2 years.

Oh ok, so you replaced the little black sponge with this stuff?
So is it really long like you stick it in the overflow and it touches the bottom of the tank and is up in the overflow as well? I'm trying to get the picture in my mind...

I've noticed my chambers are pretty dirty...but don't know how to clean them or if they ever get cleaned?

I cut them about 3-4" long and wedge them in so they're leaning against the back. That keeps the water level from rising and only the bottom of the filter gets used.

I'll get a pic for you tonight.

Had my wife try to pick some up for me, she grabbed the wrong ones...the B size, didn't fit. Plus they were $19.99, so this is the deal here huh, I'll pick me up some.

How often are you changing them?

how'd she get the wrong size? I'm sure you told here A... lol.

I'm not using a prefilter. If that sucker gets clogged it drops the water level in the sump and makes my ATO come on when not needed. The pads were great. My skimmer sometimes is overzealous with bubbles, and they would make my blue sponge(clogs way too quickly) or filter floss float. The pad fits super nicely on the tray, has activated carbon in it, removes and goes in easily, and hasn't clogged. I just set my purigen and chemi pure right on top.

Maybe you can buy a single and try it out. If you like it, order them off of amazon. I'm changing them once a week during my water change. They show very little sign of clogging so I'm sure they can be used longer.

My Purigen and ChemiPure woudln't hardly get wet if they sat on top of where that sponge filter goes. I put them in the bottom of chamber two...

Are the A size pads the same size as the middle chamber?

Yeah, I have mine on top, and they are just barely submerged.

Yes, they are a perfect fit.

What do you guys think about running a 24" 6 bulb ATI Powermodule over a solana? Do you think the 24" length will cause light to spill into the room?

Has anyone tried using a overflow box and external sump? I would like to increase my water volume and use a bigger skimmer. TIA

I think the ATI powermodule is one of my favorite (if not THE favorite) light fixture. If you hang the 24 inch version just a bit higher, I think you'll be just fine. It might hang over a bit. I don't have personal experience though.. just from what I've seen on this site and in personal a bit.

You may want to read up on the t-5 lighting thread. They have tons of great lighting suggestions.

For me, I would get the 6 if I had the money. That way I'd be confident that I could keep anything. If there was too much light. I could take out 1 or 2 bulbs and you wouldn't notice.
