Solana tank owner thread.

I borrowed a mag 5 from a friend to see if it fits in the back compartment in my solana.
Fits fine but only picked up 80 gallons per hour from where I lost 120 per hour due to Chiller install.
But the one thing I didn't like about the mag 5, Too much noise due to vibration! Very noisy! Need to have some modified rubber feet added to this to quiet it down.
I'd like to re-coup 100 gallons per hour back so that the tank volume is turning over 10 times per hour.

I'm not getting any noise from the Quiet One 2200 I've been running for about a year.

I run my chiller through an external pump on a closed loop--provides additional flow.

That is a pretty piece of equipment. I look forward to seeing it in place with the rest of the system.

Thank you! Looking forward to getting it under stand. Will have it setup end of this week and will get pictures posted. Top off should house almost 6 gallons of water, an little more than a gallon for each of the of the 2 part compartments.

How do you guys feed the fish with a sensitive skimmer(Tunez 9002) in the back chamber?

What I do is turning off the return pump, skimmer and reactor. Then wait for the water drop down the overflow height. After feeding, I have to restart the skimmer which will take a while to perform well.

Any suggestion?

I have the tunze 9002 an don't have problems while feeding. Only pumps that I turn off an I don't turn them off is I hit the feeding mode on my vortech, an tunze.
If your worried about pieces of food being skimmed then put the black sponge in while feeding.

I set a standby mode on my controller when I feed. I turn off return pump, skimmer and my Vortech. For feeding, the standby lasts for 5 minutes. Vortech comes back on after. Return pump has a delay of 10 minutes past that and skimmer an additional delay of 1 minute. With that, I never had an issue with my skimmer. Now that my skimmer is in a sump, I no longer have to worry about it coming off.

Yes. I made an above tank sump / refugium. Details of the build and pictures are in my homepage.

I gave Jeff at Lifereef the measurements an he built it. Cost was $179.00. I will be taking photos of all my little gadgets I had added to stand below. My Solana is competely automated now.

So do you have it on the 2nd or 1st shelf in the stand?
They are out of Denver right? Is that who you had made this?
I emailed them about making another one. Hope its the same guy.
Can't wait to see pics of how you hooked it all up, my RKE will love this.

Here are some photos of a custom resevoir that I had built to house top off an 2 part along with a compartment for magnesium. An its all going to fit nicely below in my solana stand!

Reed,
Thats some tight work work on that reservoir. Top notch.

Yes you got the right one. Jeff will know. Mine was the first ever done. I have my resevoir on the bottom. My Profilux doser is on the top shelf.

Found my diamond goby on the floor today... I had eggcrate on and just bought the stuff to make a screen top yesterday! He was kind of a pain because he spit sand onto my zoas and acan. Any suggestions for other sand sifters that maybe don't sift quite so much?

could ya tell me if a new solana 34 is suppose to come with a cover fot the chambers in the back? i ordered one and it did not have it and the skimmer was leaking from a seam. so oi cantacted current and they said the tank does not come with a cover for the chambers but i remeber that it did.

Twin spot gobies are good for sand. I also think they look cool too..

I've had 2 Solanas. Model# 7048 (reg. glass) did not come with one
Model# 7043 (ultra clear glass) did come with one

I guess it is dependent on the model number you have

In my experience all other gobies sift far less sand then the diamond ones. The twin spots I have seen do a little sifting and my yellow watchman does little to none.

The correct Material Is called Enkamet and Is much tougher than just any mesh, As they tend to come apart rather quickly. Also the best way to connect the mesh Is with very tiny zip ties or Fishing line for better long lasting results that wont wind up blowing your pump up. I have done many mods and the cheap stuff just don't do the job for long! I think I have some laying around If you cover the cost of shipping I'll send you enough to do It several times LMK . Just PM me your info and we can work something out.
Bill

Hey Bill,
Might be interested in getting some of that mesh from ya. I'll pm ya about it.

They definitely look cool. Do they eat fish food or do they only eat what they find in the sand?

I have never had a sand sifter before this diamond goby. I have about 1-1.5" of sand and was thinking that a sand sifter would be good since I believe this would constitute a "shallow sand bed" and I'd be better off keeping it stirred up. Does this sound right? Now that I'm down to no fish I could still change directions.

Do you have a yellow watchman in your solana? Are there other Gobies in there? I have a YW in my 95 and am contemplating moving him into the solana, but you're right, he doesn't sift the sand at all.
