Solana tank owner thread.

about apitasia.. my 4 peppermint shrimp made friends with the apitasia and move along the current together.

I didn't know what apitasia was until it was eating my zoas.

so I bought that solution you inject with syringe and kill the 2 big ones I had in 2 seconds.

no more..

I have an infestation, its all over my rocks, small, med, and large, I can't seem to shake them. I've been trying some Aiptasia Control paste, basically kalk paste, and it helps some, but I can look all over my tank and see lots of small and medium sized ones...with a few dime sized ones being my largest.

oh.. I understand that looks bad..
so how the peppermint shrimp went? they ate some?

I had some bubble algae in the past as well, in my case is because I travel and I left the tank seating 1 month without water changes

now it is fine. no weird critters.

u use RO/DI? Im not an expert but apitasia and bubble algae based on what I read it may be a water / light problem.

Triggerhappydude, I have had really good luck with Berghia Nudibranch. They are expensive but work really well in a smaller tank. If you wanna try some shoot me a pm.

Yes I use RO/DI and have an awesome amount of light with my ATI Powermodule. I need to do a water test tonight to see what my params are at.

hey guys, sorry to be such a pest, few more questions if I may.

Are any of you using the small 4" R2 moonlight on this tank? If so, are you happy with it and how exactly does it mount.

Have any of you added actinic supplementation to the disco ball? I've seen a 14k bulb in it, but I'm thinking I might just a little bit more blue/actinic. But not sure what would work well and integrate good into the look of the tank.

Has anyone built a mesh top that still lets light thru, yet gives some protection from jumpers? If so, do you have any info you can share about construction, materials, etc?

I use the dual R2 with the controller. I love it! I mounted it to my light fixture, but I don't have the disco ball. It is desgned to mount on the top edge of the tank or in a canopy. I love the moon phase mode on the controller and I think that my corals do too.

great.. do you have pics of that setup?

thanks a lot.

Two of my koralias are almost at the bottom, pointing up. I find it really helps keep the water stirred up and keeps detritus moving around in the water column. Also has less chance of blowing the sand around.

Yes It Is, It scratches very easy even a piece of sand In your Mag Float will scratch It real bad. To me Starfire Is too exspensive for glass that Is soo easy to damage!

Wow, really?

I have a starphire and have no problem with scratching whatsoever with my magfloat.

Interesting.

Ya, want to get back in to the hobby but nothing like before 90 SPS tanks $$$ these Solana's look like exactly what I need.

Did you find you needed more light than comes standard with the set-up?

Not really, 150 watts would do fine, but many of us like to keep SPS and wanted more light. With 400 watts, I have more than I think I have seen on any other tank, though 250 watts seems to be the most common.

for those using probes with controllers or monitors in solana, where do you place the temp and ph ? in the 3rd chamber? or the aquarium and where exactly / depth ?

thanks

I have my temp / pH / Salinity probes in the third chamber. The top of the probes are an inch or so above my water level.

I do not have a great picture. I am holding the probes in place with the included generic suction cups. No problem with them staying in place. The temp probe is smaller and is just zip tied to the return pump cord to keep it from falling out. I will see if I can take a picture in the next day or two.

thanks! how are you holding those together and keeping them in full vertical position? any pics?

Here is a shot. Let me know if you need any other info.
