Updated my Solana

Updated my Solana

I recently upgraded my Solana.

I traded all my fish in to the lfs, and got a pair of maroon clowns, a blood shrimp, a coral banded shrimp, and a Malu anenome. I also kept the 2 sallylightfoot crabs that I had as well as the peppermint shrimp. I thought my bio load was a bit heavy with 6 or 7 fish.

The maroon clowns climbed right in the malu anenome with 5 minutes after I put it in the tank. Check out the position of the anenome. Does anyone else have an anenome that does this?

friedrice2841, nems do wander the tank until they find a sweet spot. I'd be careful having it so close to the Koralia though. I love them, but would have them in a dedicated anemone tank. That might be my next project.

Be very careful; very very careful with the stock skimmer!

Be very careful; very very careful with the stock skimmer!

MAKE SURE THAT LITTLE RUBBER HOSE IS ON THE SKIMMERS NIPLE VERY WELL EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE OR FASTEN IT ON WITH A ZIP TIE. It could save your tank and fish. Sorry about the cap locks but it’s important and wouldn’t want to see one of you go through what I just did.

I just found the answer to a nitrate problem I’ve been having for around 2 weeks now. I also woke up yesterday morning to 3 of my fish gasping and dying or dead. My now dead coral beauty (my favorite fish) was one of the nicer looking ones I’ve ever seen and he never nipped coral. It’s hit or miss with those fish and I’m not going to take a chance with a new one eating my corals. So basically I will never be able to have a fish that beautiful in this tank again.

I thought the skimmer just broke in and was why it wasn’t making as wet skimate as before; nope. The hose must have been just barely around the nipple basically making the skimmer useless. It caused a major nitrate problem as well as starving my fish of oxygen. When I was originally putting the skimmer together I was thinking to myself, this is the worst design ever, the tube barely even stays on to begin with. I will put a fastener on it ASAP. I can’t believe they would design something so crucial so poorly. A 5 cent zip tie could save thousands of dollars of life. The ridiculous thing is I never even messed with the skimmer. The hose just eventually started coming off the nipple.

What hose are you talking about? i didn't think the skimmer had a hose... i thought it was a pump with a plastic, holey tube. Are you talking about the return pump?

The tube I am talking about is an opaque flexible rubberized piece of tubing that connects to a nipple on the skimmers pump. It feeds the skimmer pump air to force through the skimmers main tube where all the bubbles come from. If you don't have yours hooked up I would hook it up ASAP because you are getting no aeration or real skimming. I doubt you don’t have it hooked up since your tank looks like it’s doing so well in the pics you posted.

OOOOOH the air line tube? yeah, mine is still hooked up... I can tell becaue it's still wheezing like faint old man. I also check for skimmate production daily. If it does fail, I have many means of aeration in my tank for the short term.

Mine was still wheezing loud enough to keep me up and still made a small amount of skimate; the air line tube must have been like just barely hanging on. It fell of without me even really moving or messing with it, unless taking the collections cup off and emptying it is considered messing with it or moving it around. It is very easy for the tube to slip off just be very care and at least check it once in a while if you don't zip tie it on. I'm pretty TO'd with my self for not zip tying it when I was putting it together and thinking to myself this is just going to fall off.

dailydriven911, What do you have in the middle chamber? My set up looks similar to yours now. I added a phosban ractor and an ATO to the return chamber. I have a mini fuge in the middle, but i wanted to run some carbon too... I was thinking of setting up a small canister filter, but I don't want any more crap coming out of the back

Could you get a closer shot of you tank? I want to see what it looks like close up.

This is how I have the chambers divided...

chamber 1: skimmer
chamber 2: l/r rubble and filter pad on top drip plate
chamber 3: ato water level sensor, tlf phosban/carbon reactor w/ mj400, stock return

Here are a couple pics...hope this helps

I took out my fuge... I wanted a place to put carbon, and I didn't notice any difference in my tank with it in place. Also, the light was causing the back chamber glass to get very dirty with pest algae. So I added a large bag of carbon instead... so I have almost the same setup as dailydriven minus the skimmer mod... which I am debating.

my jbj ato is being a pia. aqua lifter will not fill up before it turns off even at the highest setting. Anyone know if the aqua lifter has total pumping power of 30"max or is it 30" in and 30" out?
