Solana tank owner thread.

Just got a solana as well, cycling it. Anyone know what a good moon light would be for the tank? Maybe one that isnt really visible and keeps with the whole minimalistic look?

hey solana34 you haven't updated us much about your nova xteme lights! i'm really curious how they're doing with colors and growth of your corals. and lowredanger your tank is sic!

ok so my tank, go to my sig and look at my pics.......i did the build thread on another site so i just basically posted a sequence of pics.

my mods.......black eggcrate cover to protect from losing more fish. i lost 1 black/white baby clown and nearly lost my little trigger after he jumped out. i know i know trigger police.

heater added to skimmer compartment.

added live rock rubble to middle compartment after removing the the plastic plate and placed cheato on top of the lr.

added a clamp-on light with a 7 year@ 3hrs./day grow light. it's on a timer for midnight-6am.

considering lighting options......wondering if i should buy the 20" nova extreme 6 x 18 watt t5., the phoenix bulb to go in the existing disco ball....or whatever.

currently for corals;
lps, sps, softies.......sps is doing well with decent growth. i was gone 1 day and today i come home to the monti attatched to rockwork.

all my corals appear healthy. i dose 2 part along with ions for reefs by aquavitro. roughly 10% wc weekly and i run the disco ball from 10am-10pm

fishlist......2 baby black/white clowns
lawnmower blenny who is really a big that swims
small bluejaw trigger

thanks for looking and all comments accepted including trigger police stops......it'll go into my upgrade into a 150-180

Thanks, your tank is looking good. If you were wondering about lights i just have the disco ball with the phoenix 14k bulb definitely better colors.

Do you know how big the blue throat trigger gets? and is he reef safe i was looking into getting a reef safe trigger when i get my 180 up and running.

they can get up to 9" but like any fish they grow in relation to feedings and tank size. some sites describe them as not being reef safe while others say they are. from what i've heard they are not meat eaters and that they are very friendly. mine is very cool and friendly to all in the tank.

Quick question for you guys.... does the glass lid have a cutout in the rear for feeding or anything? Or must you carefully remove the lid once, maybe twice, every single day?

It does have a cutout but I personally found it useless. I still had to remove the glass everday to refill the ato bottle. I ended up just bringing it to a glass shop and had them cut a few inches off.

Recommended cleanup crew?

Recommended cleanup crew?

Just finishing the cycle... what would you guys recommend for a clean up crew?

One more thing... the skimmer pump is SO noisy, has anyone tried replacing it yet? With what?

What about the main pump too?

Eheim or something maybe? Wouldn't this tank look much better near-silent? :)

Clean up crew - I only got a few hermits and some trochus and cerith snails. They do a great job on the glass.

I switched out the main pump to a maxi-jet 900. Quieter and probably more reliable.

Here is a picture of my tank a few months ago. I cant get photobucket to work so i cant upload new pics.

I switched the pump to a Quiet One 2200 on a 1/2" Sea Swirl--much better flow. Not running a skimmer, but if I decided to, I'd probably do the Tunze Nano with the collection cup mod.

I have maybe a couple dozen snails--mix of trochus, small turbos, nassarius, nerite and cerith, and 6-8 scarlet hermits (I find these to be the least aggressive) and a serpent star.

I don't think an Eheim pump will fit. The Q1 2200 barely fits.

I've only made it through 5 pages so far but still working on it.

I OWN a solana tank (since March) but it hasn't seen water yet. I've got the build thread back on our local club's website. I'll have some questions but mainly (since I haven't finished this thread) has anyone used an external sump with their solana?

I'll come back in a bit.

OK, just finished all 20 pages and the most 'outside the tank' I saw was a TLF Phosban reactor and a CPR small fuge.

I was thinking about adding a full blown sump. PVC overflow in chamber 2 and returning to chamber 3. Part of the reasoning is I'll be building a desk/stand/built in for our living room and am planning on making the desktop 24" deep. There would be a two inch 'slot' running the length of the tank behind it for cords and plumbing.

The sump below would be probably an 18 gal tall tank with the standard stuff.

It's a mental debate with myself but it still isn't ready to be moved any further so I have plenty of time.

Hey Jeff,

Do you already have the solana tank? I haven't seen anyone do a full sump outside of the tank but if you didn't buy the tank yet but it would be cheper for you to buy a custom tank with an overflow to do the sump under your cabniet. The price for the solana is high becuase of the all-in-one portion of it, if you were going to do an external sump there would be no need for the internal chambers which take up space, JMO. If you already have the tank... that is a good idea in order to put a larger heater, skimmer or hook a calcium reactor up to.

Exactly my thoughts. Yes, I have the tank already. We got an amazing, screamin' deal on it at a local store's anniversary sale via a misquoted price. We only got the tank but I found an almost new orb on ebay a week later for $150. We're trying to go with a sleek modern look and actually my wife picked out the Solana.

The reasoning behind a sump was I'm planning on a DSB, fuge, carbon/phosban/purigen reactor(s), more powerful skimmer and an ATO. My lovely wife does not want to see anything other than the tank and pendant.

So if there are any suggestions on support for that kind of equipment without plumbing a sump I'd love to hear 'em.

Perhaps I'll try setting it up stand alone first and if temps or chemical needs get out of whack I can always add the 'extras'.

Well, without plumbing, a HOB overflow is obviously your only choice. Unless DheereCrossing is short for David Copperfield.

Jeff,

This is just from my research online (my solana is sitting empty in my dining room, not set up yet). I have seen people use DSB's in their tank, some people have used the second chamber in the back as a fuge with a daylight bulb to grow some macro, and also... you can put in a new skimmer. I have seen threads of people using many different ones (tunze, deltec, precision marine). I have a tunze auto top off I'm going to use, putting a 2.5 gallon freshwater tank in the stand. Also, you could hang a phosban reactor off the back and put carbon or other media in it. I think you could get away with all the equipment you'd want, without an external sump, that’s just my opinion from seeing other peoples work.

Neil
