From what I have read the unit isn't strong enough for deeper tanks.I have no clue as to the 400 watt models that will be available.I also don't know what the cost will be.I would wait for the 400 watt version.

The way I understand it...

The fixture is 8.5 inches wide and the light "beam" is pretty focused... obviously a lot more than a MH.

Therefore, in order to effectively cover 24 inches of aquarium width, one would need at least 2 fixtures side by side and the width in this case will be 17 inches +/- how far apart they are placed.

I have an odd shape (half circle) acrylic, that is built around the staircase, and I'm thinking of getting 3 fixtures of (24Lx8.5W) and 1 fixture of (14Lx8.5W) for complete coverage.

I will place the length of the fixtures (front to back of the aquarium) but I have 2 concerns / issues.

1) Since I will place them in the canopy - just above the water, I have to come up with a way to install them possibly on rails and a crank shaft... or something like that so I can get one of the fixtures easily "out of the way" for maintenance. (Need to be able to create a "hole" by removing one of the 4 fixtures out of the way at any one time...
Any suggestions???

2) My tank is 36 inches deep and therefore I will have to wait for the 400W versions to come out.

Chiller needed??????

Chiller needed??????

Amphibious,
Are you still running a chiller? What temp is your aquarium now? Thanks
Mark

Hi Mark,

I do have my chiller hooked up. I live in FL and we are having a very warm winter and this summer I expect to need it too. We do not cool our house down like most folks do. Most people chill there house to 72 - 74 degrees. That's wasteful. I was in the heating/cooling business for 40 years. All that's necessary in cooling a building is to remove the humidity. We run our house in the 78 - 80 degree range. So will need it for sure then.

Now, the chiller runs intermitantly but not much.

Amphibious, I got my 48 inch the other day. Have you changed your factory settings? DO you run Automode? I love the lights dont get me wrong but they are not blinding light but a very full colorfull light. I was worried about the coral growth, or is it deceiving and the reef gets the light it needs without bein a blinding white light... If that makes sense.

Don't mistake bright for right! In fact you should cut to 75% at least to avoid coral bleaching. This light is stronger than you think. Go back and read this thread. Very informative.
slowly go to 100%. If you miss the bright then set the day whites to 100% and the day blues to 75-80% and you'll see the tank will look brighter. My tank is showing amazing growth. I have the 48" also.

ppht,

I've changed the amount of day blues from 100% to 80% and the lunar whites and blues to 15% because I thought the lunar lights were too bright. I am running it on auto mode after making those changes.

And, jmchzn, is correct. "Don't mistake bright for right!" Follow his direction.

RGibson,

I don't know the humidity in the house. Of course it varies from season to season but getting a humidastat would be a good idea.

Okay so the common feeling is reducing Day WHites to 80%... I dont have too many corals though just 2-3 small frags... Should I still? Also I read that someone changed the Hemisphere setting to replicate the tropics... Does anyone do anything to there timezones? FOr instance my daytimes go off at 5:45pm in my area moonlights currently go on at 6:30... Any thoughts?

I think southern hemisphere will extend daylight cycle. I acheived that by changing my longest day and shortest day settings. My lunar cycle starts right after sun goes down 3 minutes I think. I was also thinking of trying the southern hemisphere settings But for now I'm happy with 12 hours of light.

ppht,

I didn't reduce my day whites and didn't experience any coral stressing. I have 36 SPS frags and various other LPS and softies. No problem here leaving the day whites at 100%.

I've taken a note or two on this and other threads. My woundering is why does everyone worry so much about the elect, bill? and how much the lights, heaters and pumps use. The cost on sw aquariums can run in the thousands very easy.

jmchzn
So you didnt change your hemisphere you just adjusted those day limits. Do you remember how much you changed them or to what?

Amphibious
Okay Thanks, I think I will leave mine up as I dont have too much to worry about as far as corals....

I am not speaking for everyone here but I have to guess. We didnt just spend Aprox $2200 on lights to save on elec only... My reasoning is Heat in my office which is crazy off the halites. 2. I had my AC full blast in the summer and barely could feel it. 3. Having to Wonder if your lights getting weak or not, even though they look fine. 4. I like technology :) 5. Coloring effect is great. 6. They are quiet nd compact 7. And yes the electric bill is almost half. About $50 a month so far... I can buy more frags
