Solatubes in Miami/So. Fla?

Going to speak to my GC about adding these into the plans.

Lmk what he says and price difference if you don't mind. Feel free to pm me.
For me, only bad part is that I'm doing a three story home, so tank would have to be up there. But going to look at all my options :D

It'll be a while before I get to that part of the house, but I will keep you posted. By a while, I mean possibly 5-7 months. I did ask him about it the other day and he said it would be super easy to do though. Highest cost would be materials.

Good to know. And that's fine, I'm sure my house will take longer than yours lol...

Going to submit the plans in about a month and will have to wait about a year for permits lol

Jeff and Charlie both still have the tubes; though Jeff has turned the 300g tank into a FW/Planted tank nowadays.
Either are usually more than willing to share their experience with the tubes, and you'd they are probably willing to have visitors if you'd be interested in stopping by. Both of north of Naples, one in Lehigh Acres the other in Port Charlotte. Both are also SWFMAS members and are at every meeting... If you wanted to catch up with them.

You need to make sure that the solatubes have a NOA. If not you can not get a permit. If you do it without a permit and they don't have a NOA it will affect the amount of discount you can get on your homeowners insurance.

Great to hear! Thanks so much. Making meetings for SWFMAS may be tough but maybe I'll schedule my next trip to Tampa around one if you'll have a guest from FMAS! ;)

Thanks for the info. I'm in the process of permitting now but was going to do the tubes as a change order (if I do them). What's NOA?

When you look at the NOA, look for the Missile Impact Rating, you want Large Missile Impact Rating...keep the NOA in a safe place. When your homeowners insurance is up for renewal, they may request to have your property reinspected if you're receiving discounts, if you can't show that the solatube meets code (should have a decal on it as well) they may revoke your shutter discount. Here's an example of a solatube NOA: http://www.solatube.com/sites/default/files/field/files/tech_resources/product-code-approval-previous-dade-county-acceptance-no-03-1016.01.pdf

+1

Normally they are called "opening protection credits". Has to do with all windows and doors.

So basically if you have all impact windows (or impact rated shutters) and doors , but this solatube doesn't have the large missile impact rating it will take off the whole discount. To have the discount, ALL windows and doors must have large missile impact rating.
I work in insurance, this discount is a deal changer for most people. They can be from $500 - $1000 discount.

Wow. Incredible info. Thanks so much everyone. I wouldn't have even thought about this.

Ccasa004 - wish we would have met long ago! My uncle is my architect and well, yeah, he's my uncle! I get family treatment which is not necessarily a good thing. 2.5 years later, still no permits!

To be fair, he has done an incredible job designing the house exactly how we wanted, but oh boy, patience pays!
