Some frags please...

Dave,

Stephanie wants the tiger shrimp if Dan doesn't want it. I could pick it up tomorrow... maybe some mushrooms too.... lmk

Hey DevinWolfe got, I will take it but having an issue right now. What is the temp of a tank suppose to be at? I am trying to maintain it at 78, but have not been successful. My Xenia is really upset and my leather isn't opening all the way. It is around 76 right now and at nights keeps going down to 74. I am using a heater rated for a 50 gallon, and have it set at 80. So should I just turn it up a little? I am using a digital thermometer. Please let me know, and thanks.

Dave, go ahead and give the shrimp away. Cee, I am having a temp problem and a little PH problem today. Any way I could maybe pick some up Next weekend. I don't want to kill anything by moving it and shocking it.
Thanks,
Dan

From what I have seen, the numbers on most heater adjustment knobs is just an approximation. You have to tweak them a bit form there. In other words, you can't just set them at 80 and expect it to stay at 80 degrees. They may be even 5 degrees off of that mark.

I have learned that buying a small heater is almost always a waste of time...unless you're into nano's. The difference in cost for the 300watt heaters isn't all that great and they will run less to keep your heat up....which hopefully equates to a longer lifespan. I prefer the titanium heaters, because you don't have problems with them breaking inside your tank.

74 should be OK. I won't be back until next w/e so if you're still interested LMK.

What's your tank size? I like to go at least one size larger heater than my tank actually needs. That way it has plenty of capacity. I'm running a 75 w heater in my 24 gallon Nano.

Is your tank located near a window or door? If so, you may need to relocate it or put up some foam insulation board between your tank and it. Drafts can be another problem.

As for pH, the pH will naturally drop to as low as 7.8 or even a little lower at night due to the natural CO2 cycle of the tank. If it is good during the day, I wouldn't worry about it other than maybe adding a little extra buffer.

Good luck,
Steve W

PS: get yourself a good laboratory grade thermometer. The one's they sell at the LFS and pet stores are ****. I got a lab grade thermometer and discovered that my expensive LFS thermometer was 5 degrees off.

Well, bought a Digital Thermometer, and it seems to work good. I set my heater at 82, and now it has been a steady 78-79 degrees each day/night. As far as my PH, it is back up to 8.0 My Xenia is really upset though, been a few days now and hasn't fully opened up. I might just need getting some photo-plankton to feed it. What elements should I be adding? Iodine, Calcium? I have a buffer I add once a month n that's it.
Thanks,
Dan

You can dose any additives/supplements you would like and yes iodine and calcium are key. If you are going to dose calcium you should have an alkalinity kit to as well. You should not dose something you are not testing for. Depending on your salt mix you may already have a decent mix of those elements, like Reef Crystals.
