Some help is needed....

I read on another Reef Board about a reefer that did FW dips in the morning without seeing stress in the clams. Is it ok to dip clams in FW for no reason?? Also isn't it only supposed to be a last resort?

One more question do clams "slime up" if their stressed? Supposedly it's be claimed that the clams slime up and this slime supposedly causes bristle worms and hermit crabs to attack the clams because the slime makes the clam smell like its dieing...but its only stressed??
I just dont want a lot of other reefers to be misinformed.

Why would you FW dip a clam for no reason?
Considering the mortality that I've read about (though difficult to seperate from the dip or the condition that warrented the dip) I wouldn't do it unless I thought the clam was on his way out...that's me though.

My crocea will have some stringy mucus trails from his mantle sometimes...doesn't seem to correlate to anything..but nothing has ever come after him becuase of it...don't know if this is the "slime" you refer to....my maxima doesn't seem to do this.

Maybe Peabody or mbbuna will have a different oppinion.

Thanks grimmjohn, I agree with you 100% on the FW dips as only a last resort.

I've never heard of the slime story either, thats why I was curious when I read what was posted.

Thanks,
Kris

I agree FWD's are a last resort for an irritant of some kind.
As for the slime attracting bristleworm or crabs,I think that if the clam is unhealthy for some reason, thus making it slime ,then they may be attracted to them, but to the unhealthiness of the clam not the slime.
Did that make sense?:)

Made perfect sense. Thanks for clearing it up for me.:D Same way I was thinking, just got confused when the whole sliming issue and FW dipping every morning came up. Thanks again.
