Some interesting opinions at last nights meeting.

opinion

opinion

I didn't take the time to read all of the postings....but

Bruce tried to give an informed opinion based on his experience and many times told people that it was his opinion/experience that led to the opinions he gave. He was battered by the opinions of many (1 year to 25 years) and whether or not his opinions were 100% or 0% right he was trying to share them while informing people that was his opinion and experience. There is evidence that the carbon/skimming eliminates many nutrients. The information is out there based on others scientific experiments, step up to bat and do your homework. It seems like this was taken as that those were both bad methods of filtration and shouldn't be used. (If I remember correctly he wasn't Pro carbon but for skimming) I've repeatedly heard that if running carbon you need to maintain your supplements because the carbon will leach them out of the water. (Not necessarily bad but replace them) I've heard conflicting views on skimming from a variety of sources, most of which have well over 5 years of experience.

Bruce, At the next meeting just shut up and stop providing us with the valuable knowledge and experience that you have gained through studying and reef keeping. We can keep our tanks and read many books for multiple years till we gain the experience that you willingly provide us each meeting. God forbid that you are only 99% accurate. At my table I'll have a spot for you with some pizza and some beer. I appreciate you leading the meetings and putting up with a barrage of questions (some painfully basic, some objective with no clear scientific data) from those learning and also the more experienced devils advocates among us.

UGh,

I thought this part of the topic stopped!

SO he is 99%% accurate? COme on!

WHy dont you check every tank of the month and tell me how many dont skim like crazy?

These are the best of the best tanks. Look at the best tanks in this area and tell me if they skim? With tanks like these they have to be doing something right.

It wasnt that some of his opinions werent off base. It was the way he handled Paul. I just think if that were a new person they would either never show up again or be afraid to ever ask or give an opinion again.

This is what I was afraid of. One thing I amm looking to do is to create large populations of zooplankton in my tanks. I like the filter sock because it is great at getting the 'floaties' out of my tank. (technical term) I assume the nitrate development in the sock is the dead remains of zooplankton (amongst other things).

Maybe if I ran them submerged, they would be able to collect anything that sinks (ie dead or decaying matter) and allow the living (floating) stuff to escape. I know tis would reduce their usefulness, but it could maintain their usefulness in the tank for removing what I want to remove but still allow me to keep the stuff I want in my tanks.

Think that would work?

You could always just use a larger micron size... :)

Hey!

I hijacked this thread fair and square!

Dont get back on topic (It started going in circles anyways).

Yeah, stray this off topic again!@ This was getting good as an off topic thread :D

I had actually came back to this topic because it was not about personal opinions any more...hold on, my collection cup is full and I have to go empty it. :D

I will start a new thread about the skimming issue. Probably best to let this thread die of natural causes. It had a very unhappy childhood, and that seems to have manifested as occasional outbursts when it was an adult.

My skimmer sucks. Anybody selling one? I'm looking to overskim the crap out of my 120 reef. Or perhaps you can make a suggestion on what skimmer to get.

Gresham... thanks for the effort! Awesome!

AND.... If this is what becomes of this thread, then it will be a good outcome.

Also note, I re-read my above post and it may be taken as a cheap shot by me. Indeed not the case. :) I actually have a crappy skimmer on my 120. I really do need a new one. :) Its an old "top fathom" make. lame.

I admit I have a smaller pump on it. I got the skimmer free from a friend with out the collection cup. I built one diy from tap plastics. It seemed to work ok for awhile. It should have a mag 7 on it. So I'm thinking....... hmmmm... get new pump on a pieced together skim or just get a whole new unit.. BTW... its the TF100... Rated for 120-200 gallons. (back in the day when it was made) skimming requirements/standards have changed since I think.

Bruce you said this: "funny Paul, I never heard there was a problem with the Q&A until you brought it up."

This thread was started by RobertLoop: I never brought it up.

Then several people said they either liked or disliked the way Q&A went. The I said this:

I just feel that there is more than one way to skin a cat, especially on this hobby. I was dissappointed by the way the Q and A session went last night as well.

Please reread the post before you and or others say "I" flamed you!

Gresham- Does the 100 micron allow for rotifeast to pass through? I usaully turn off my return pump for 5-10 mins when I feed roti and arcti.
