Some items needed!

My sump is in a state of chaos. I have a "mag 5" rated @ 500 but it can't keep up with my "lifereef overflow box" rated @ 700 gph and it is very loud, so i need a diff return pump. Also I'm running this through an empty 10 gal refugium so I need live sand and chaeto. I also need a small float-switch for the evap. return. So if any of you have any of these items I am willing to pay any resonable price. Thanx Guys/Gals!

Put a "T" on the return line and a ball valve to bleed off the excess flow to the tank and it has the added benefit of increasing the flow in the fuge. Works like a charm.

If the overflow is rated 700gph then initially it mat have taken more water than was being returned and flooded the sump. Remove some water from the entire system.

If your pump is only returning 500gph to tank, then your overflow can only drain 500gph.

I was just giving the ratings for the equipment not the actual flow.
The issue of concern here is that I need sand, chaeto, float switch, and a diff pump rated 500-700 gph. So if you or someone you know has this let me know. Thanx!

The overflow is putting the water down faster than the pump is returning it. It's not that the fuge is filling up too fast. It's that there is too much air in the overflow tube it's making this flushing sound which I compensated for via a valve for resistance at the bottom. The problem with that is, when the total volume of water changes because of evap. so does the need for resistance. It's outta control!

if you are having flushing it is because the pump is putting more volume in than the drain can handle...ie...not enough air. Throttling the pump back slightly has always worked for me. The overflow can't flow out more than is coming in. You already know this though.

1. The pump moves less water than the overflow's max output = I'm not certain this is even a problem.

2. When there is constantly air in the return tube it makes this constant flushing sound. = I put some resistance at the end of the tube thus keeping it filled water up to the overflow, but not enough resistance to cause the main tank to overfill. *Maybe there is another solution?*

It can be a problem, bends and any restriction can cause the overflow to flow less than the rated amount. reduce the input of water to match the two. the restriction on the drain side is a recipe for disaster.

Take a look at www.dursostandpipes.com, this is why you are getting a flushing sound from your overflow. It has nothing to do with your return pump/overflow combination. You can modify the durso setup to work for the lifereef overflow.

It all goes back to air, the Durso does address that issue. I hadn't seen that external overflow version before...worth trying. make sure you don't have too many bends or restrictions in the drain line, it can make a huge difference. I stil prefer flexible drain line for that reason.

The drain is unhindered. I'm using about a foot and 1/2 1" tubing. I will check into that durso idea. Thanx guys!

Tee of at the bottom of the over flow and run one line up high above the tank. this will let water in to the line and should keep the noise down.
