Cool way of shooting that way !
And thx for sharing those beautifull pictures and cool shooting tips
Makes me wanna buy a laptop :) (my PC is about 60 feet away from my tank)

greetingzz tntneon :)

I hooked up my 50D to my computer last night and was taking pictures of my tank... I'm curious, I couldnt see any kind of exposure meter when I was shooting in manual mode, so I had no idea if it would be too dark or too bright, I just had to take the shot then adjust and take again.

Am I missing something obvious somewhere?

Nice job getting busy with it!

I get what you're asking and I think you are correct. Of course, I may well be missing something obvious too, though, being digital, it's never really bothered me.

There is the option of doing "test shots", which could be the software's (lame) attempt to compensate for what you are wanting.

You can set the brightness of the "live view" window by where you set the zoom rectangle on the image. However, I've always just shot and adjusted exposure to produce a decent image. In theory, in RAW mode, exposure isn't that critical as one can always adjust substantially in post, but I usually bracket exposure to help train myself to critically evaluate exposure and to be aware of the settings.

I hope you dont mind if I SLIGHTLY hijack your thread, but it was already getting slightly hijacked so I dont feel too bad.

I hooked up the camera to the PC last night and goofed around, tonight I got some better shots, I just want to show you one.

It's definitely awesome having the camera about 5 feet away from me and not having to touch it, this let the trigger sit there calm and serene and I was able to photograph from my computer. I took 10-15 shots and he just stayed in the same place the entire time, crazy, I never could do that if I was moving to the camera and manually doing everything.

No problem about the alleged hijacking.

Wow, what a really neat shot! Cool texture on his skin and awesome color. I like where you set the focal plane.

I hear your point about not being near the camera allowing the fish to chill and hence present more opportunities for good photos. Good use of technology.

I do wish the software would allow one to focus the lens from the computer. The lens obviously has an electronically controlled motor for auto focus, so it seems as though one ought to be able to access / control that.

One other advantage to shooting remotely is that the raw image is saved directly to my laptop so there's no downloading from the camera when I'm done.

Fantastic shots as always Ken. Re: lenses, check into the Sigma 150. I have one and it is a dream.

Anyone know if Nikon will allow shooting via the computer too? I have the D40.

Love the pictures.
when you complain about not being able to focus from the laptop does that mean only manual focus or autofocus? As I would believe when you press the shutter from the laptop then the camera would focus automatically?
Not sure what camera you have however some cameras offer live view ( In Nikon terms) which allows you to see the image on LCD befoe shooting so would it be possible to assess your focus on Laptop then before shooting?

Thanks.

I have a Canon EOS 50D which has live view. Autofocus doesn't work in live view mode, so I manually focus. If I had the camera and lens set on autofocus, sure, it would focus when I press the shutter release from the laptop, but I prefer to use live view and set the focus manually. Autofocus can also be wonky through glass.
